REPORT OF THE SELECTMEN FOR THE YEAR 1943
The Selectmen submit the following report on the activities of their department for the year 1943.
There were held forty-six regular meetings and six special meetings and several joint meetings and numerous conferences and public hearings.
At the Annual Town Meeting held on January 18, 1943 Sture Nelson was reelected and duly qualified for the term of three years.
The Board organized on January 19, 1943, with the election of Harry B. Butters as Chairman.
Appointments were made during the year as follows:

April 20 - Permission granted to Norwood Post 2452 Veterans of Foreign Wars to conduct their annual buddy poppy drive on May 28 and May 29, 1943.
April 20 - Permission granted to Roll Land Inc. to remain open one night each week until 2:00 A.M. with the provision that if any disturbance or complaint be received, said permission will be cancelled.
May 4 - Permission granted to St. George's Syrian Ladies' Society for carnival on May 28 and 29.
May 4 - Permission granted to St. George's Syrian Men's Society for carnival on May 26 and 27.
May 25 - Permission granted to Norwood Lodge of Elks and Norwood Emblem Club for carnival on June 16 through June 19th.
June 22 - Permission granted to St. Catherine's Holy Name Society and St. Catherine's Fife and Drum Corps for carnival August 5, 6, and 7.
September 14 - Permission granted to St. Peters Parish and YMA for Mardi-Gras on September 22, 23, 24, and 25, and also permission was granted to use Elliot Park Grounds for said purpose.

June 29 - It was ordered that a sewer be laid and constructed on ways running southwesterly and westerly from Rockhill Street.
September 21 - Signed order of taking of easement through land of Gen- eral Printing Ink Corporation on Pleasant Street.
October 26 - Layout of Town Way to be known as Irving Street signed.
October 26 - Layout of Town Way Extension of Silver Street signed.
October 26- Layout of Town Way to be known as Carpenter Street signed.
October 26 - Layout of Town Way to be known as Earle Street signed.
November 16 - Orders of taking with respect to layout of Irving Street, Silver Street Extension, Earle and Carpenter Streets signed.
November 30 - Voted to extend sewer main on Second Street.
Transportation and Related Matters
January 26- Norwood Motor Tours granted license to pick up and dis- charge passengers along the present certificated route in Norwood with exception of picking up and discharging passengers on Washington Street.
April 6 - Notification from New England Transportation Company of discontinuance of 5:00 P. M. trip from Boston to North Attleboro over Route No. 1.

October 19 - Chairman Butters notified Board he had appointed Rose- well A. Norton Chairman of the Planning Board and A. W. Thompson Town Engineer to Post-War Rehabilitation Committee.
December 14 - New bus stop locations on Washington Street approved in accordance with Article 3, Section 4 of Traffic Rules and Orders.
Throughout the year all persons desiring a hearing or conference with the Board with respect to complaints or grievances were given full oppor- tunity to be heard and the matters complained of given due consideration.
Cooperation with the Committee on Public Safety and other committees dealing with the emergencies created by the war was wholeheartedly given. Much thought and consideration was given and will be given by the Board to the important part which the municipality will play in the vital matter of post-war rehabilitation plans. Your Board feels that this problem, which confronts every communiy in the nation, is of primary importance and upon its proper solution depends in large part the future of the community.
Conclusion
The foregoing report is intended merely to indicate in part' the many and varied duties which your Selectmen have considered during the year 1943.

REPORT OF THE TOWN COUNSEL
The Honorable Board of Selectmen:
Gentlemen :
I submit herewith my report of the activities of the legal department from May 4, 1943, the date of my appointment, to December 31, 1943.
The greater portion of the service rendered was advisory in character. Written opinions were submitted in many instances. Advice was given the following officials and departments:
Selectmen, General Manager, Town Clerk and Accountant, Board of Health, School Committee, Building Inspector, Board of Appeal, Con- tributory Retirement Board, Superintendent of Schools, Registrars of Voters, Town Treasurer and Collector of Taxes and Planning Board. In addition appearances were filed in matters pending in court and various hearings were attended. Pleadings were filed in matters in litigation.
Litigations and Claims
Florence J. C. Hennessey vs. Town of Norwood: Petition for damages for taking of land on Nahatan Street. Pending in Superior Court of Nor- folk County.
Boston vs. Norwood No. 385941: Suit for aid rendered. Answer filed. Pending in Suffolk Superior Court.
Boston vs. Norwood: Suit for aid rendered under General Laws, Chapter 117 and Chapter 118a - Returnable in Suffolk Superior Court March 6, 1944.
Cullen vs. Norwood: Suit for personal injuries due to alleged defective condition of sidewalk. Pending - Norfolk Superior Court.
Lamphear vs. Norwood: Suit for personal injuries and property damage due to alleged defective condition of highway. Pending - District Court of Northern Norfolk.
