Report of the Library Trustees for the Year 1896-7.

The usual inspection was made by the Trustees in Janu- ary, and everything found to be in a satisfactory condition.

The appropriation for the library having been increased at the last town meeting, it was deemed wise by the Trustees to open the library to the public Wednesday afternoons from three to five-thirty.

The experiment thus far has demonstrated that, while the general public do not require more frequent access to the li- brary, the teachers in the schools and some of the pupils are greatly convenienced in their work by it.

During the year, we have had to record the sad and unex- pected death of Miss E. A. Hurd, who has served with ef- ficiency on the board for several years. By the joint action of the Selectmen and the Trustees of the Library, Mr. Theo- dore Bennett was elected to serve out her unexpired term.

In November, the Trustees received from the sons of Mr. James Sumner Draper, a portrait of their father, which we have placed upon the walls of the library. His life-long and unselfish service for the library will make this one of our most valued possessions.

The accession of new books this year has been quite large ; 270 by purchase and 46 by gift. These, we trust, do not fall below the high standard which the library has always endeav- ored to maintain.

31

At the last annual town meeting, the Trustees of the Li- brary were commissioned " to erect a stone tablet or monu- ment on the Town Hall lot, to designate that in Wayland was established the first free public library in Massachu- setts." This duty has been discharged to the best of our ability with the money appropriated.

For the Trustees,

C. W. HEIZER.

Report of the Superintendent of the Wayland Water Works.

GENTLEMEN :-

We have made some changes this year which were needed very much. The hydrant near the Damon place has been moved and is now where it can do some good if needed. We have placed a new hydrant on Plain street, which the proper- ty holders have been wanting for a long time. We have also placed a hydrant on land of the town, back of the Grammar School House, laying about one hundred and fifty feet of four inch pipe to same, which will give good hydrant service to the Shoe Shops, in that locality. The water has been extra good this year and plenty of it.

We were obliged to shut off eleven water takers for non- payment of water rates.

Commissioners of Water Works Sinking Fund. WAYLAND, Feb. 27, 1897.

Report of Superintendent of Streets.

WAYLAND, MARCH I, 1897.

Appropriated for highways and bridges, $2,400. Of this sum, $192.92 was used for the removal of snow, after the close of the financial year, and prior to the annual Town Meeting, leaving a balance of $2,307.08 : of this amount, $2,296.02 have been expended the present year, leaving a balance of $11.06. There are outstanding bills for the removing of snow in January and February of $165.66. I would recommend that the town make provision for the re- moval of snow, as it is almost impossible to reserve a suffi- cient sum out of the regular appropriation.

The culvert near the house of L. H. Sherman has been re- built, and the bridge near the house of Samuel Russell re- planked.

It will be necessary for the town to procure some gravel near Cochituate village the coming year, as the present supply is getting somewhat limited and of poor quality.

Respectfully submitted,

ISAAC DAMON, Superintendent.
