I find the roads and bridges in a bad condition and will con- tinue to be so unless we have more money appropriated. I have repaired two bridges and seven culverts, and there are two bridges that are unsafe and must be repaired immediately. There are no outstanding bills. The snow bill was $607.52.

SUPERINTENDENT OF THE WAYLAND WATER WORKS REPORT.
GENTLEMEN, - My two years as Superintendent of Water Works has convinced me of one thing, and that is, that the town would have been better off in dollars and cents, and their property in better shape if they had employed a Superintendent by the year to look after the works, instead of expecting a man to do it for the sum paid for same.
I venture to say there is not another water works in the country of this size that does not engage a superintendent by the year.
I know from my own experience that it is impossible to give the water takers the best service possible and keep the works in any kind of shape unless a man put all of his time in same.
The reservoir got very low last fall, caused by no rain and a wasteful use by water takers, for just as the water began to get low, a great many went to running their faucets about all the time, and of course got poorer water, and came near taking all the water in the reservoir.
I have not done any very extensive repairs this year. The Maintenance Account is :

REPORT OF FIRE ENGINEERS.
The Department has responded to only two alarms during the year, viz.,
May 2. False alarm.
June 18. Fire in shop occupied by Scotland & Campbell and owned by T. D. Bent. The Department after laying fourteen- hundred and fifty feet of hose was unable to reach the fire with water. The building was totally consumed with its contents.
The Engineers were appointed by the Selectmen as a committee to extend the Fire alarm system to Simpson's Corner and make necessary repairs. This has been done in a satisfactory manner at an expense of two hundred dollars, the amount of the approp- riation
The department is in an excellent condition, both as regards membership and apparatus. The new fire alarm box located at Simpson's Corner is numbered 27.
