APPENDIX.

THE list of streets, courts, and places, will be found complete. In many cases the numbers in the streets at which another street begins and terminates, are indi- cated. This information will be found of essential value, and will answer the purpose of a more detailed Street Directory.

Some changes in the names of streets have been made the past year. The name of Shawmut Avenue has been substituted for that of South Suffolk Street ; the name of North Street has been substituted for that part of the street heretofore known as Ann Street which extends from Dock Square to North Square ; and the name of Myrtle Street now includes the street formerly called Zone Street. There are several duplicate names of streets, courts, and places. The evil of several streets bearing the same name must be apparent, and ought to be remedied.

The numbers in many of the streets are very irregular, which is found to be a great inconvenience and annoyance. In many of the streets, however, this evil has been removed, the city having adopted a thorough and systematic plan of regulating the numbers, and taken effective measures for carry the same into operation. This has met the general approval of the citizens. It is undoubtedly the design of the government to continue the reform of regulating the numbers in the streets until the evil now experienced is entirely remedied.

The following streets have been re-numbered during the last year, viz. :

Ann

Essex

Merrimac

Ash

Federal

Middlesex

Shawmut Avenue . South Margin

It has been shown that the numbers of the streets can be regulated with compara- tive ease, and without the difficulty at first apprehended. The reform so successfully begun should be vigorously prosecuted to meet the wants and wishes of the public.
