Owing to the small entering class, and the inevitable drop- ping out of a few pupils each year, the membership of the school is smaller this year than it has been for some time. With a small graduating class, and the promise of a large entering class in the fall, the outlook for a much larger school next year is very good.
A few changes have been made in the course of study as it was found impossible, with only three teachers, to teach all the subjects offered under the old course. The Latin and Scien- tific Courses have been combined into what is called the onlar
-67-
Course, commercial law and commercial geography have been omitted from the Business Course, and some changes have been made in the number of recitation periods per week devoted to certain subjects in order that the time spent on them may conform to the college entrance requirements. In place of the old method of reckoning promotion by points, the number of recitation periods per week is made the basis of promotion, and a pupil must pass at least 72 periods of work in order to secure a diploma. At the end of this report will be found a copy of the revised course.
By omitting the short recess in the forenoon and beginning the noon intermission ten minutes earlier, the school session has been divided into seven uniform periods, forty minutes in length. The school day is therefore regarded as a single ses- sion beginning at 9 a. m. and closing at 2.30 p. m., with a half-hour recess from 11.50 to 12.20.
This will account for some cases where, on the report cards, a full day's absence has been recorded against pupils who have arrived at school during the noon recess. The state law requires that a pupil be in attendance at school at least a full half-ses- sion in order to be counted as present for that session. There- fore pupils dismissed before 11.45, or not arriving until after that time, are marked as absent for the entire day.
In closing, I wish to thank you and also the School Com- mittee for your assistance during the term.
Respectfully submitted,
ALTON HARRISON HARTFORD,
Principal of Partridge Academy and Duxbury High School.

Music required one period per week in all classes.
Physics and Chemistry given on alternate years to both Seniors and Juniors. Book-keeping in the Freshman year in- cludes single entry book-keeping, commercial papers, spelling and penmanship, and is preparatory to the commercial work of the Sophomore year.
No pupil will be allowed to carry less than seventeen hours per week. No pupil is entitled to a diploma until he has passed all required subjects and has received credit for seventy-two periods of work. Elective courses not passed need not be re- peated, but do not count towards a diploma.
