This does not include those who have entered business colleges and schools of that class, nor those who have entered college after further study at other schools. These sixteen pupils have entered such schools as the State Normal Schools, Simmons Col- lege, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Worcester Poly- technic Institute, The Massachusetts Agricultural College, The Cooperative Engineering School, Harvard, Dartmouth and Colby. If a pupil will decide early in his course that he wants to go to college, will choose those subjects which are accepted for entrance at the college he wishes to attend, and is willing to study a little harder than he would have to in order simply to get his diploma, he can prepare for college in four years at the Academy as well as he can at any high school. No college requires over 14 or 15 units for entrance, and 16 units are required for graduation at the Academy. Four units of English, 2 of mathematics, 2 or 4 of Latin, 2 of history, 2 of science, and 2 of French will admit to practically any college. A unit is a full years' work in a subject. Many pupils who decide suddenly that they wish to go to college find that they have not studied the proper subjects, or else have not taken the subjects seriously enough during the
-107 ---
first year or two of their course. Each year when the time to choose subjects comes, the pupils are warned to choose those sub- jects which will be most useful to them, and to keep in mind the possibility that they may wish to go to some higher school; but each year some will choose what they think is an easy course, and wish afterwards that they had taken something else, "be- cause they want to go to college."
In closing, I wish to thank you and the members of the School Committee for your kind assistance during the year.
Respectfully submitted,
ALTON HARRISON HARTFORD,
Principal Partridge Academy and Duxbury High School.
