REPORT OF THE MOTH SUPERINTENDENT
January, 7, 1939
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:
The moth season was a busy one as usual. There was a sharp de- crease in tent caterpillars throughout the Town due to the strenuous campaign of the school children for the third successive year.
We got a good start in our gypsy moth spraying and while we had more stripped wood area, the residential sections were not as seriously affected as in previous years.
In North Weymouth, on Neck Street, there was an outbreak of the ugly nest caterpillar. These insects spin a series of webs covering hundreds of square feet, and tie up grasses and weeds together at the tops in bunches with their peculiar webs ..
According to the specialists engaged in forestry and entomology we are to be faced with greater quantities of wood boring insects and bark beetles, due to the quantities of fallen timber. The attraction of birds by everyone would give us much protection from insects and give us the added en- joyment of our feathered friends.
Respectfully submitted,
V. LESLIE HEBERT, Moth Superintendent

REPORT OF THE TREE WARDEN
January 7, 1939
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:
This year was a busy one for the Tree Department.
Besides our regular tree work, we removed nine large elm trees at Sea and Athens Streets.
Next came the Hurricane of September 21, causing a half-million dollars damage to our shade, forest, and fruit trees and fruit crops. Many hundreds of trees, while not uprooted, were seriously damaged by splitting or loss of branches.
This means a tremendously big job for years to come, in restoring our trees to a near-healthy condition. Pruning, bracing, fertilizing, cavity work and spraying will all have to be done on a large scale, in the same manner in which the trees on State roads are being cared for. The future of our trees depends on the care which we give them during the next couple of years.
I hope that in the very near future, our tree appropriation can be in- creased so that we can plan to do one-third of our Town trees completely each year. In this way, in three years' time, every street tree would be carefully gone over, and in years to come, the upkeep would be considerably less.
At present, I am working on a plan to solve the tree trimming prob- lems of the Telephone and Electric Power Companies, which will enable them to keep their wires cleared at less cost to them, cut down on the destruction of our trees and enable us to accomplish more tree trimming. Line clearing is as necessary to the Electric Light and Telephone Com- panies as their services are to us. It must be done for the good of their service as well as for our trees' sake. In the future, line clearing can be almost eliminated by proper tree planting. But where trees and wires occupy the same space, we must consider them both.
