The girls of the eighth grade are given a complete review and taught the use of a commercial pattern. They are then ready to start on woolen skirts. Most of the girls prefer the use of the zipper to the placket for the openings in their skirts. The girls then make either a blouse or a house coat. At the completion of this article, they make an intricate dress.

A few lessons are devoted by both grades to the making of Christmas gifts. This year the girls made peasant belts, neckties, and all types of embroidery. Since most of the family sewing is repairing, all spare time is spent on patching and darning.

This year two exhibits were planned for, one in the fall and one in the spring. The fall exhibits, which were held in all the schools in December, were a great success; and I wish to thank the parents and friends for the splendid co-operation and interest shown.

SCHOOL GARDENS

(Report of Miss Sarah E. Brassill, Supervisor of School Gardens and Clubs)

Lessons have been given in the seventh and eighth grades, beginning with plotting and planning the garden during the winter months and ending in the fall with harvesting and a study of the results. The lessons are supplemented by visits to the gardens during the growing season.

No attempt is made to give a formal or scientific garden course. Relying on the pupil's interest, and working with each one individually according to his present experience, information, and environment, all are given an opportunity to learn a few facts about seeds and soil. They learn by fail- ures as well as by successes that, given certain conditions, certain results will follow, thus learning also to provide the right conditions. Poor seeds carelessly planted will not germinate well. Poorly prepared soil will not produce fine plants.

Lessons are given to all pupils. Owning and caring for a garden is optional. There have been two hundred gardens listed this year, one hun- dred fifty of which were of size and quality to be entered as 4-H Club Gardens. Owners of club gardens try to meet the requirements in size and quality of the Extension Service of the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture. From these gardens, exhibits were sent to the children's exhibit at Horticultural Hall in Boston, to the Norfolk County Fair at Wal- pole, and to the children's department at the Brockton Fair. In each case the awards received were creditable. No local exhibits were held this year.

Produce from the gardens, whether flowers or vegetables, was used in the homes or sold by the owners, or in some cases canned for winter use. Each garden owner handed in a written report of his year's work. In spite of weather conditions, the gardens prospered.

Other activities supervised included projects in poultry, canning, food, home furnishing, and conservation. Pupils especially interested in one of these activities organized as 4-H clubs, subject to the requirements of such clubs in Massachusetts, and undertook to do at least a certain prescribed amount of work. The canning group exhibited at Walpole and at Brock- ton. The poultry group sent exhibits to the Eastern States Exposition at Springfield and brought back several awards. The conservation club had a part in the same exhibit.

As in past years, all pupils have interested themselves in community projects. Their work in the early spring campaign to help control the tent caterpillar was outstanding. Later in the year they interested them- selves in the effort to eliminate ragweed. During July and August they were helped and encouraged in this by the supervisors in charge of the playgrounds. Pupils are also taking active part in the development of the Bradford Torrey Reservation, urged thereto by the Weymouth Garden Club. One public-spirited merchant offered substantial prizes for well- made birdhouses to be placed in the reservation. Thirty-five entries were made. A representative of the Audubon Society acted as judge. Prize- winning entries are already in place on the reservation, and others, after suggested alterations have been made, will be set up. A feeding station and suet bags have also been placed.

The amount of work involved in all this could be accomplished only with the help of volunteer assistants in the clubs - teachers, friends, and the older students. All such help is hereby gratefully acknowledged.

SCHOOL NURSE

(Report of Miss Anna A. MacDavitt, School Nurse)

This is the seventeenth annual report submitted by the present school nurse. It is difficult to make a report of this kind interesting, because the number of activities are limited and one must necessarily repeat much that has been said before. However, there are many interesting incidents too intimate to be discussed, which make it possible to accomplish so much in this field.

There are five active clinics in our schools. In the tuberculosis clinic of the Norfolk County Hospital the pupils of the seventh, ninth, and eleventh grades are examined, since it has been found that during this . period of a child's life he is more susceptible to this disease. This clinic and the Chadwick Tuberculosis Clinic have been merged this year, as the number of children remaining on the Chadwick list is small.

In January 1938, Dr. Mary Hammond, State Psychiatrist, examined twenty children who were retarded. Dr. Hammond recommended that six of these children be placed in the Junior Manual Arts Class. Two en- tered upon advice of their own physician, and three entered from other towns, making the total enrollment forty-two.

The eye clinic sponsored by the Lions' Club cared for several cases during the year.

In June, the school physicians examined 305 children whose tonsils were enlarged or diseased. As a result, 293 notices were sent to parents advising them of this condition. Several cases were referred to the Ro- tary Club clinic held during the summer vacation.

On November 29 a toxin-antitoxin clinic was held under the direction of the Board of Health in the various schools, the school physicians serv- ing in their respective buildings. One hundred forty-one pre-school age children and 462 grade school children were given the three inoculations necessary to cause immunity from diphtheria.
