Failure to provide sufficient money for present and future tree removals can only increase the financial burden of our tax payers.
WE CANNOT ELIMINATE THE DISEASE, BUT WE WANT TO BE IN A POSITION TO CONTROL IT.
The peak year of Dutch Elm infections was 1950 with 373 trees. Losses in 1951 were 337 trees, a decrease of 36 trees. Not a startling decrease, but encouraging to say the least.
Let's keep our losses moving downward.
This committee offers the following recommendations:
Remove all infected trees within six months after they are found to be diseased, or within the calendar year.
(The wood of Dutch Elm disease trees deteriorates very rapidly.)
Prevent the possibility of damage suits to the Town through personal injury or damage to property by prompt removal of all known infected trees.
Since we, as a Town, feel justified in expending large sums of money for the beautification of single areas, we must consider the overall lands- cape value of our elm trees to the Town.
78
We must consider the tremendous financial burden of removing the 20,000 elm trees of our Town, should they become infected.
We must consider the tremendous depreciation in property valuation which follows the loss of street trees.
We must look ahead to the cost of replanting the majority of these trees.
We trust that the Town Meeting will accept these recommendations, and support the Tree Warden in his motion. REMEMBER! THE DUTCH ELM DISEASE IS EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS.
We further recommend that this committee be continued, but as a Citizen's Shade Tree Committee, thereby increasing its scope and useful- ness.
Respectfully submitted,
EVELINE B. CAUSER
