HIGH STREET.
Last but not least is the High Street School. In a measure isolated from the sister Primary Schools, and also having a " Grammar " class, from which some are promoted to the High without attending our West Gram- mar School, seems to prevent our knowing as much about them as other sections of the Town. Your Com- mittee take pleasure in saying this is a good school, and that Miss S. Alice Reed, though for so many years the teacher here, is still faithful and painstaking in her work.
The parents also need a word of praise, for notwith- standing they live so far away from our High School, this locality is always well represented there.
HIGH SCHOOL.
During the Summer vacation, Mr. Murray, who had been with us for four years, informed the Committee that he had been elected one of the teachers in the Somerville High School, at an increase of salary. We at once set about securing another teacher, and, after an extensive correspondence with applicants for the position, we finally elected Mr. M. H. Bowman of East Douglas, Mass.
Very soon after the opening of the school in Sep tember, Miss Bessie R. White, who had been very ac- ceptably filling the position of Assistant, also resigned, to answer a call to her native city, Somerville, at a much larger salary. We at once secured the services of Mrs. Helen M. Slack to fill this position.
10
The average citizen, who is not familiar with this school, can have but a faint idea of the difficulties to be encountered by two new teachers, unfamiliar with each other's methods of work, and unacquainted with their pupil's peculiar characteristics, but called upon to take up the work of teaching according to their individual ideas. Their methods may have been equally as good as others, but were new to the scholars, and different from former methods and from the pupils' preconceived notions, hence, in some instances, they were not kindly received.
With this state of things existing, coupled with the fact that there were in the school a number of wilfully unruly and disobedient pupils, who had no respect for themselves or any one else, it will be doing no teacher any injustice if we say there has not been the progress made that could be desired, or that the Committee hoped.
Your Committee will do all in their power to bring the school to its former high standing of popularity and efficiency.
Trusting we shall have the hearty co-operation of parents in our endeavor to make all our schools valuable institutions of learning, and also centres of elevated moral culture and refinement, we subscribe ourselves,
Your obedient servants,
JULIA E. WEBB, School GEORGE W. BAILEY. }

PERSONAL.
The subscriber takes this method of informing the cit- izens of Scituate, that he will not under any considera- tion, at this time, accept a nomination or election upon the School Board. He wishes to say he has conscien- tiously served the Town in this capacity for seven years to the best of his ability, and that whatever short-comings may have been apparent were from the want of quali- fication, rather than an abuse of the position. He would also tender to the Town his thanks for the courtesy shown him at all times, and for the prompt response to any suggestion made with reference to the welfare or improvement of our schools. About those who you have from time to time elected to serve with him, he would say, the relationship has always been the most pleasant and will not soon be forgotten.
CHARLES E. BAILEY.
TRUANT OFFICERS.
Only one of the Truant Officers reported to the Com- mittee. Mr. Hosea D. Nott has visited five different fam- ilies several times. Nearly all are now regular in attend- ance. Where this is not the case, the parents are more at fault than the children,
