zine the children learn of the work among other children of foreign lands. Contributions of jellies, canned goods and vegetables have been made through the local chap- ter. Contributions of money have been made to help carry on the work among the tuberculosis patients in our county hospital.
For several years pupils of the sixth grade have been reading books suggested on the State Reading List pre- pared by the State Department of Public Libraries. This list contains books with which every child should become familiar. In order to stimulate an interest in and the de- sire to read the standard books for children the Depart- ment offers a five-book certificate or a twenty-book certifi- cate when that number of books has been read and re- ported on. Last year practically every member of the class read at least five books, while about fifteen received certificates for having read twenty of the prescribed books. We shall carry on this same plan again this year.
Last year Miss Bradford organized a harmonica band in the fourth grade. This group, now in the fifth grade, is still carrying on the work. From this type of work the children can develop a sense of pitch, rhythm and time that will help them in the study of other musical instru- ments.

REPORT OF SCHOOL PHYSICIAN
To the School Committee of Scituate:
The Annual routine of physical examinations of the pupils of the Scituate Schools has been completed, and the practice of individual examination adhered to; this consists of an examination of the nose, throat and chest, and an inspection of postural balance of the body. The sight and hearing are tested by the teachers.
The Toxin-antitoxin Clinic was conducted this year, and will be continued next year; this is a very valuable procedure, and is sponsored by the Town Board of Health.
The Pre-School Clinic is conducted every year, and is under the State Department of Public Health.
There was a physician in attendance at the football games played on the home grounds during the past year.

Since 1916 he had made Scituate his Summer home and in 1931 moved here permanently.
He died in Scituate, November 22, 1936.
--------

The greater part of his life was spent in news- paper work as reporter and later as financial editor of a Boston paper, and then as advertis- ing manager of several financial magazines.
Mr. Lee served on the first Advisory Board of this town.

REPORT OF SELECTMEN
To the Citizens of Scituate :
Perhaps the most impressive event of the year was the three hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of our Town. The history of Scituate is as exciting, colorful and dramatic as any tale of adventure. The pageants served as a vivid reminder of events in the history of Scituate and will remain in the minds of our citizens and guests long after the words of the pageants are forgotten; nothing could have impressed the facts of our history so clearly, especially on the minds of children. The Old Cudworth House and Barn, a museum of priceless antiques, mementos of those his- toric days, were visited by hundreds of interested people many of whom came from distant places.
The year just passed marks the completion of several long enduring improvements. The Town Pier was constructed within its appropriation and leaving a suf- ficient unexpended remainder to surface and level any settlements caused by the winter freezing and spring thawing.
The results from the appropriation of fifteen thousand dollars are most gratifying, it being expended in ac- cordance with requirements of article twenty-seven of the March meeting Warrant. The Works Progress Administration Projects are as follows, detail of which may be found in the several department reports on fol- lowing pages. Willow Street and Beaver Dam Road drainage, Laying of Water Mains, Cannery, Sewing, Town Forests, Roads and Sidewalk, Grading rear of High School Building, Certifying Town Records, Grub- bing of Roadsides.
The Federal funds expended for wages during the year were forty-nine thousand five hundred and sixty-

eight dollars ($49,568.00) on the WPA Program; one hundred and fifty-eight dollars ($158.00) on ERA Pro- gram and the value of surplus commodities distributed were ten thousand nine hundred and seventy-three dol- lars ($10,973.00)-Total, sixty thousand, six hundred and ninety-nine dollars ($60,699.00).
The Federal funds expended for emergency relief which were used in conjunction with Town appropria- tions from 1933 to 1936 inclusive are as follows: Direct Grants, five thousand three hundred and seventy-two dollars ($5,372.00); CWA Program, thirty-three thou- sand one hundred and ninety-eight dollars ($33,198.00) ; ERA Program, sixty-eight thousand twenty-five dollars ($68,025.00); WPA Program, fifty-nine thousand six hundred and twenty-nine dollars ($59,629.00) and in- cluding the value of commodities distributed, of four- teen thousand nine hundred and ninety dollars ($14,- 990.00) makes a total of one hundred eighty-one thou- sand two hundred and fourteen dollars ($181,214.00).
