REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

To the Citizens of Scituate:

The school housing situation has been improved considerably by the addition of the new Jenkins School, and the people of Scitu- ate should be grateful for the time and efforts of the Building Com- mittee, who spent so many hours of work and planning to build the school, finished and occupied, at a reasonable cost to the town. We need another school, very similar to it, at the other end of the town, to take the place of the present Hatherly School.

The site committee, appointed this year, has investigated many sites for a school in that vicinity, but hopes to find a suitable place by Town Meeting.

The addition to the High School has helped the situation there a great deal, but that again will soon be too small, as the large classes from the elementary school come to high school age.

If a regional vocational school, which is now being considered by the surrounding towns, should be built, it would help to elimin- ate some of the congestion in our present High School.

The addition of a guidance department located in the High School, but serving all the schools, is a great help to the students, especially to the boys and girls preparing for college.

The Committee wishes to thank the Townspeople for their continued interest and support of our schools.

Respectfully submitted,

SCITUATE SCHOOL COMMITTEE FRED T. WATERMAN, Chairman DORIS D. WARD, Secretary ELLEN M. SIDES GEORGE C. YOUNG EDWIN P. GUNN

SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPORT

REPORT OF THE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE

To the Citizens of Scituate:

The year 1954 has seen the work and responsibilities of the High School Building Committee nearing completion. The addi- tion to the High School was officially presented to the Selectmen at an Open House Ceremony held in May 1954. The Selectmen, in turn, placed the building under the responsibilities of the School Committee.

During the past year, work was completed in the old High School building including the rebuilding of the boiler room, cafe- teria, and kitchen.

A contract was entered into for the grading and seeding at the High School. The grading has already begun. The remain- ing work, including the seeding, will be completed in the Spring.

The Town Treasurer has received the first payment from the School Building Assistance Commission for State Aid. This pay- ment was in the amount of $13,008.60. A second payment in the same amount has been requested.

A detailed account of all expenditures will soon be made to the Massachusetts School Building Assistance Commission for State Aid and at that time the complete financial report will also be made to the Town.

Respectfully submitted,

FRANCIS A. OBERT, Chairman CARLTON F. GREEN SAMUEL J. TILDEN NELS H. SANDBERG EDWARD H. SCHOTT, JR.

REPORT OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE

January 9th marked the completion and conditional accept- ance by the town of the new Jenkins School (Building only) at an Open House which some 500 townspeople attended. The build- ing construction program throughout the job, we report to be good. However, due to a personality clash between the Grading Contrac- tor Mr. Carlino and two lady visitors "Carol and Edna," the grading took on a pitifully slow rate of production. So much so, in fact, that it seemed advisable to leave the finish grading and seeding till the spring.
