Work on the new station was commenced on June 4th, and prac- tically completed and occupied by the fire apparatus on Dec. 22nd.

The committee believe that the town has one of the best fire sta- tions to be found in any town, plain but substantial on the outside, modern, convenient and with all the up-to-date features on the in- side for quickness in responding to the alarms. There are accom- modations for seven horses, four sleeping rooms, engineer's office, bath room, toilet room, and a large and commodious cellar. The station is heated by steam and lighted by either gas or electricity.

The committee desire to express their appreciation to Mr. W. A. Prescott, representative of Roger Howard, for the faithful manner in which he has carried out the fulfillment of his contract, for the personal interest taken by him during the complete erection of the building.

The following are the sub-contractors for the different work on the building :

Foundation, A. A. Butler.

Brick work, Dunn & Ingraham.

Carpentering, Roger Howard.

Plastering, Hugh Morgan.

Plumbing, George H. Taylor.

Heating, Nutter & Seabury, Boston.

Electric work, R. J. Lawder.

Painting, James Sherritt.

Gas and electric fixtures, A. R. and A. H. Tarbell.

For itemized account of expenditures see Auditor's report. The chairman of the committee, Jacob C. Hartshorne, does not sign re- port, being absent from the state.

The town clerk's records show that 609 young men have enrolled their names under this pledge. Three whose names appear below

have been paid the fee during the past year, making a total of seventy-eight since the trust was received in March 1883. C. SWEETSER LECTURE FUND, $10,000.

By the terms of this bequest this fund is for the purpose of provid- ing such lectures as will tend to improve the public mind. A reason- able fee is required and the net proceeds of the lectures are to be paid over to such charitable organization in the town of Wakefield as the municipal officers of the town may designate, to be distributed among the worthy poor of the town.

The sum of $400, as income of this fund for one year, has been paid to the Sweetser Lecture Committee.

Arrangements for this season's lectures are somewhat later than usual and therefore the results cannot be included in this report.

The fund has for several years been invested in notes of the town of Wakefield upon temporary loans, but, with the approval of the board of selectmen, it has been deemed wise to set aside for the present at least, bonds of the Sewerage Loan, which carry interest at three and one-half per centum per annum, and the funds are now invested as follows :
