ALBERT W. FLINT, Sec'y Board of Auditors.

Wakefield, Feb. 1, 1901.

134

Auditors' Final Statement.

The Board of Auditors herewith present to the town their report for the fiscal year ending Feb. 1, 1901.

From March 22, 1900, to January 31, 1901, the selectmen have drawn 2594 orders on the treasurer, representing $181,322.26. We have examined the vouchers for these payments and have also veri- fied the arithmetic of all bills coming before the board of selectmen for payment during the year, and our report upon them will be found arranged in the departments to which they belong.

Our final balance sheet shows an expenditure of $206,832.06, over- drafts to the amount of $1,334.94 and unexpended balances of $225,906.17.

We have verified the receipts of such departments as pay money to the treasurer ; we have examined the books of the collector of taxes, and of T. J. Skinner, treasurer of the library and reading room, and find them correct. We have also examined the accounts of Mr. Skinner as town treasurer, and find them correct, with the proper vouchers for all receipts and payments ; and that he has a cash balance of $12,816.73 in the National Bank of South Reading.

We also certify that he has securities and deposits representing the C. Sweetser lecture fund, burial lot funds, library funds, Flint soldiers monument and old cemetery funds and Nichols temper- ance fund.

The unexpended balances, as seen by our final balance sheet, of light plant general, electric extensions, cemetery plans, fire station, school general, library, library card catalogue, high school building extension, sewerage, Nahant street, evening school and hitching posts are available for next year, being either unfinished contracts or incomes from state and county.

The overdraft on gas extensions will be charged up to next year's business, state aid is refunded by the state, and interest on town debt will be taken care of at annual town meeting.

Owing to the shortness of time after February 1, and being desir-

135

ous that the town should be fully informed, the board have engaged the services of a Boston expert who has made a thorough examina- tion of the books at the light plant and we take pleasure in referring to his statement, as published in this issue of the town report. It has been done at no expense to the town.

A comparison of the present balance sheet with those of previous years will show that the town is rapidly growing in one respect, that of expenses, and as this increase means increased work for the town officials it requires an extra effort to get the annual report before the people between February I and the annual town meeting.

In our report of the expenditures of the various appropriations we have itemized as far as time and space will allow.

We again invite any citizen who desires a closer knowledge of bills and accounts of the town to make application to this board and same will be gladly answered.

In compliance with the vote of the town we have compiled the annual town report and submit the same.

Respectfully submitted,

EVERETT W. EATON, ALBERT W. FLINT, GEORGE W. LINNELL,

Auditors.

Report of Overseers of Poor.

The Board of Overseers herewith submit their annual report. The dry weather in the late spring cut down our crops materially. We raised one hundred and seventy-five bushels of potatoes.

We have cleared up about two and one-half acres of land on the north side of the farm which is added to the tillage land of the farm. We have cut six or seven cords of wood from the land.

We have made a much needed alteration in the barn cellar. The entrance which was on the west side has been changed to the north side, and the cow yard has been filled up so as to drain the water away from the barn.

We have cut about seventy cords of wood.

There has been a great deal of sickness both at the almshouse and among the outside poor, causing a large expense for medical attend- ance and care.

We have expended this year for various persons $369.62, which has been refunded and does not appear in our report.

We have housed and fed 1, 167 tramps at a net expense of $426.53.

Respectfully submitted,

WILLIAM A. CUTTER, WILLIS S. MASON, ALBERT D. CATE.
