TO THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN:
The Engineers of Fire Department respectfully submit the follow- ing report :-
March 22, 1907, grass fire on land owned by heirs of True estate.
March 23, grass fire near Ashley estate.
April 22, brush fire near Junction depot.
August I, club stable in Dover.
August 12, fire on Charles River meadows.
August 14, fire on Charles River meadows.
August 15, fire on Charles River meadows.
August 16, brush fire near Junction depot.
August 16, brush fire on land near Adams Street.
August 18, brush fire near Junction depot.
August 18, brush fire near Susan Swanton estate.
Jan. 23, 1908, house on corner of South and Oak Streets, owned by Benjamin Boylen.
January 27, chimney fire in Frost Block.
January 31, chimney fire in house on North Street, owned by Mrs. James Hewins.
Both companies have usual number of men, who render capable service, considering the apparatus and serious lack of water.
We would earnestly recommend more modern means of fighting fire.
WALDO E. KINGSBURY. FRED LAVERTY. J. ALLEN COLE.
REPORT OF TRUSTEES OF PUBLIC LIBRARY.
The Library is fulfilling its mission as an aid in the literary work of our town. It is with much satisfaction that we note the use made of books and magazines by the teachers and pupils of the public schools. We have during the past year purchased several sets of books, valuable not only in school work, but as works of reference and already in much demand. Owing to our limited means, it has not been possible to purchase many books which have been asked for, and which are needed, if we wish to keep up with the times. During the vacation month, August, the experiment was tried of keeping the room open from 7 to 9 P.M., the Secretary doing the work without expense to the town. The patronage was excellent. So far as practicable, we have adopted the open-shelf plan, and it meets with the approval of our patrons. During the past year the Woman's Educational Association have loaned us travelling libraries upon Italian Art and English Architecture, including many fine photographs.
At first sight our financial statement will make us open to criticism, but we wish to call attention to the following facts, viz .: Up to 1904 we received an appropriation of $100 yearly in addition to the dog tax, the latter of which must be used for the support of the Library or the schools. In that year a considerable surplus remained to our credit, which steadily diminished until last year, when we had overdrawn our income a small sum. This year we have had no expenses which we did not consider necessary, yet we have over- drawn a considerable amount. We have spent less for books than any town in this vicinity. Should we be charged with the janitor service and the cost of fuel and supplies? It seems to us that we should not, unless we are granted an appropriation by the town. And we also suggest that, as our library fund has been taken by the town and is a part of its liabilities, we should receive a larger rate of interest than 3 per cent.
The whole number of books is now 5,103; loaned to individuals, 7,053; loaned to schools, 141; total, 7,194.

REPORT OF THE INSPECTOR OF ANIMALS.
TO THE SELECTMEN OF MEDFIELD:
I hereby submit to you the following report of my work as In- spector of Animals for the past year. In January, 1907, eight dogs were quarantined under suspicion of rabies, but none of these dogs came down with any such disease, and after a reasonable length of time were released from quarantine. Feb. 16, 1907, a cow was placed in quarantine under suspicion of being tuberculous, exam- ined by an agent of Cattle Bureau, found tuberculous, and killed and stable disinfected. June 28, another cow was quarantined, examined by an agent of Cattle Bureau, found tuberculous, and killed and stable disinfected. October 19, two other cows were quarantined for tuberculosis, examined by an agent of Cattle Bu- reau, condemned, killed, and stables disinfected. In October, as usual, instructions were received from Chief of Cattle Bureau to make a complete inspection of all neat cattle, sheep, swine, and goats in town. During this inspection 69 stables were visited, in which are kept 516 swine, 2 goats, and 572 cattle. Four of these cattle were quarantined under suspicion of having tuberculosis, and an agent of Cattle Bureau examined them, found them all tuberculous, and were condemned and killed and stables disinfected. Jan. 3, 1908, another cow was quarantined, examined by an agent of Cattle Bureau, condemned, killed, and her stable disinfected.
Yours respectfully,
GEORGE S. CHENEY,
Inspector of Animals.
REPORT OF SEALER OF WEIGHTS AND MEASURES.
TO THE SELECTMEN OF MEDFIELD:
I herewith report, as Sealer of Weights and Measures, that I have complied with the law by advertising as required.
The standard weights and measures are in good condition.
The 50-pound weights belonging to the town were rusty: these I have cleaned and bronzed.
The law requires each town to own a set of working weights and measures for the use of the sealer.
I have secured a set of dry measures, and the others are ordered.
During the year have sealed 26 scales, 12 having to be corrected and condemned, also sealed 25 dry measures and Io liquid and 1,440 milk-jars.

REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Report of School Committee for the year ending Jan. 31, 1908 :---
At the annual town meeting Mr. L. K. Conant was elected a member of the board, Mr. George Washburn retiring.
The Committee organized by electing C. H. Williams Chairman and W. A. Fitts Secretary.
The Committee has held all of its regular and a large number of special meetings, thus giving much time and thought to caring for the interests involved and in making what changes were deemed necessary in order to the bringing of our schools to the highest point of efficiency.
At the joint meeting of the Medfield and Walpole School Boards Mr. F. W. Kingman was unanimously re-elected Superintendent of Schools.
After a long and very careful consideration of the matter of a four years' course for our high school, in which the Committee was as- sisted by the Selectmen, it was recommended that the full four years' course be adopted and that the sum of five hundred dollars be appro- priated for the purpose of making some changes in the school build- ing in order to accommodate the pupils.
The recommendation that five hundred dollars be appropriated failed to pass the special town meeting called to consider the matter.
