ANNUAL MEETING.
MARCH 5, 1900.
Pursuant to a warrant issued by the Selectmen, the inhabitants of the town of Medfield, duly warned and notified in the manner prescribed by law, met at the Town Hall on the fifth day .of March, 1900, at nine o'clock in the forenoon; and the following action was taken upon the several articles in said warrant.
ARTICLE I. To choose a Moderator to preside at said meeting.
J. Herbert Baker was chosen Moderator by ballot, and the check-list was used as required by law. Prayer was offered by Rev. J. A. Savage.
ARTICLE 2. To choose the following-named town officers, under the provisions of Chapter 548 of the Acts of 1898, namely: one Town Clerk, one Treasurer, one Collector of Taxes, three Selectmen, three Assessors, three Overseers of the Poor, three Trustees of School and Trust Funds, five Constables, one Sexton, one Auditor, all for one year; one School Committee for three years ; two Trustees of Public Library for three years ; one for a Board of Health for three years ; one Cemetery Commissioner for one year; one Cemetery Commissioner for two years ; one Cemetery Commissioner for three years. Also to vote on the following question : "Shall license be granted to sell intoxicating liquors in this town for the ensuing year?" The vote to be "Yes " or "No." All of the above to be voted for on one ballot. The polls to be opened at half-past nine o'clock in the forenoon, and to be kept open at least four hours.
The ballot box was examined, and found in good order. The following-named persons, having been appointed by the Selectmen, were sworn and apportioned as follows: -
Isaac B. Codding and James W. Coltman to distribute ballots. William Crane and David Meany at ballot box.
Joseph M. Johnson and George G. Babcock to count votes. Edward H. Abell and Charles W. Spaulding to supervise.
The polls were open at half-past nine o'clock, and kept open until two o'clock. The total number of votes cast was 250, of which 247 were cast by male voters, and 3 by female voters. The votes were counted in open town meeting, and the following- named persons were declared elected to the several offices : -

ARTICLE 3. To choose Tree Warden, Fence Viewers, Pound Keeper, and Field Drivers.
The following-named persons were chosen by nomination :

ARTICLE 4. To see if the town will accept the reports of the several town officers for the past year.
The several reports of the town officers were taken up in the order printed in the Town Reports, and were accepted without dissent.

ARTICLE 5. To grant and appropriate such sums of money as may be necessary to defray the expenses of the town for the ensuing year.

It was voted to dismiss the recommendation of the Selectmen for an appropriation of $1,200 for street lighting. Later on it was voted to reconsider that action, and it was then voted "that the Selectmen be authorized and instructed to confer with the Medfield Electric Light and Power Company in regard to a contract for lighting the streets for the sum of $1,200; but no contract shall be entered into until the matter thereof has been brought before the town at some future meeting, and, pending this action, the Selectmen are authorized to pay for street lighting at the present rates."

ARTICLE 6. To see what action the town will take in relation to hiring money for any purpose.
Voted, That the Treasurer be authorized, with the approval of the Selectmen, to hire money in anticipation of the taxes of the current year, and to issue notes of the town therefor; and the debts incurred under the authority of this vote are hereby made payable from said taxes.
ARTICLE 7. To determine iu what manner the taxes shall be collected for the ensuing year, and also determine what percentage shall be allowed the Collector.for the ensuing year.
Voted, That interest at the rate of six per cent. per annum be charged on all taxes remaining unpaid after Nov. 1, 1900, and that the Collector shall receive for his services one and one- quarter per cent. on all taxes collected by him.
ARTICLE 8. To see if the town will authorize the Collector to use all such means in the col- lection of taxes as the Treasurer might if elected to that office.
Voted, That the Collector may use the same means in the collection of taxes that the Treasurer might if elected to that office.
ARTICLE 9. To see if the town will accept the list of jurors as prepared by the Selectmen and posted according to law.

ARTICLE IO. To see what compensation the town will allow the members of the Fire De- partment for the year ensuing.
Voted, That the members of the Fire Department be paid the sum of twelve dollars per year and poll tax, and that they be paid twenty-five cents per hour while at work at fires.

ARTICLE II. To see how much per hour the town will allow for work on the highways for the year ensuing, or do or act anything relating thereto.
Voted, That it be left to the discretion of the Superintendent of Streets.
ARTICLE 12. To hear and act on reports of committees.
The Committee on Naming of Streets not being ready to report, it was voted that their time be extended.
ARTICLE 13. To see if the town will appropriate money to pay the claim of F. M. Ballou & Co. for concreting gutters and crosswalks, or do or act anything relating thereto.
On motion of W. W. Mitchell, it was voted "that the sum of $334.35 be granted and appropriated to pay the claim of F. M. Ballou & Co. for concreting gutters and crosswalks."
ARTICLE 14. To see if the town will extend a branch of the sewer, from the point where it crosses Cottage Street, along said Cottage Street to North Street, or take any action relating thereto.
Voted, That a committee of three be appointed to report at some future meeting as to the expediency and cost of extending the sewer along Cottage and North Streets. The following Com- mittee was chosen by nomination : Patrick H. Leahy, Wm. H. Bailey, and Timothy F. Kennedy.
ARTICLE 15. To see if the town will accept, in trust, the bequest of the late Martha M. Mason for care of burial lot in Cemetery.
Voted, That the bequest be accepted.
ARTICLE 16. To see if the town will accept, in trust, the bequests of the late George H. Shumway for care of burial lots in Cemetery.
Voted, That the bequests be accepted.
ARTICLE 17. To see if the town will abolish the office of Trustees of School and other trust funds, or do or act anything relating thereto.
As the By-laws of the town require that all funds shall be in the charge of the Town Treasurer, it was voted that the office be abolished.
ARTICLE 18. To see if the town will authorize placing the name of Tree Warden on the official ballot.
Voted, That the Tree Warden shall hereafter be elected on the official ballot.
ARTICLE 19. To see if the town will take any action regarding the proper celebration of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the settlement of the town, appoint any committee to have charge thereof, make any appropriation therefor, or do or act anything relating thereto.
Voted, That a committee of three be appointed, who shall desig- nate a committee of five who shall report at some future meeting.

William S. 'Tilden, W. W. Mitchell, and George Washburn were appointed a committee of three, and presented the names of Joseph A. Allen, James Hewins, Edwin V. Mitchell, William S. Tilden, and Henry E. Marshall as the Committee of Five; and it was voted that they be appointed a committee to take the matter into consideration, and report at some future meeting.
All the articles having been acted upon, the meeting was dis- solved.

SPECIAL MEETINGS.
APRIL 30, 1900.
At a meeting of the inhabitants of the town of Medfield, duly warned and notified, and held in the Town Hall, Monday, April 30, 1900, at half-past seven o'clock in the evening, the following action was taken on the several articles contained in the warrant for said meeting : -

ARTICLE I. To choose a Moderator to preside at said meeting.
Edward M. Bent was chosen Moderator.
ARTICLE 2. To hear the report of the Committee appointed at the last Annual Meeting to report at some future meeting as to the expediency and cost of extending the sewer along Cot- tage and North Streets, raise and appropriate money for the same, or do or act anything relating thereto.
The report of the Committee was read, accepted, and placed * on file. In accordance with this report, it was voted "that the Selectmen are hereby authorized and instructed to construct the extension of the sewer along Cottage and North Streets, as recom- mended by the report of the Sewer Committee, and that the Treasurer is hereby authorized and directed to borrow the sum of fifteen hundred dollars ($1,500), giving a note of the town as security, and that said note be paid in yearly instalments of two hundred dollars ($200) each until said note is paid."
It was also voted " that all assessments received on account of sewer be used in paying the note given under authority of this vote."
ARTICLE 3. To hear the report of the Selectmen who were instructed at the last Annual Meeting to confer with the Medfield Electric Light and Power Company in regard to a contract for lighting the streets of the town for the sum of $1,200, raise and appropriate money for the same, or do or act anything relating thereto.
It was voted "that the contract, as presented by the Select- men, be accepted, and that the same be ratified "; and it was also voted " that the sum of twelve hundred dollars ($1,200) be

granted and appropriated, said sum to be made payable from the taxes of the current year."
ARTICLE 4. To see what action the town will take in relation to widening Main Street, as ordered by the County Commissioners, raise and appropriate money for the same, or do or act anything relating thereto.
Voted, That the Treasurer be authorized to borrow, with the approval of the Selectmen, the sum of one thousand dollars ($1,000), giving as security therefor one note of five hundred dollars ($500), to be paid in three years, and one note of five hun- dred dollars ($500), to be paid in five years, said sum to be used, under the direction of the Selectmen, for the purpose of widening and straightening Main Street, as ordered by the County Commis- sioners.
ARTICLE 5. To see if the town will authorize the Selectmen to concrete the sidewalk in front of the estate of Edward P. Gilley, in consideration of his giving land for the purpose of widening and straightening the same.
Voted, That the town accept the offer of Edward P. Gilley, and that the Selectmen be authorized to concrete and straighten said sidewalk, in consideration of said Gilley's abandoning all claims for compensation from the town for land taken for such widening and straightening.
All the articles in the warrant having been acted upon, the meeting was dissolved.

OCTOBER 27, 1900.
Pursuant to a warrant issued by the Selectmen, the inhabitants of the town of Medfield, duly warned and notified in the manner prescribed by law, met at the Town Hall in said Medfield on Saturday, Oct. 27, 1900, at 7.30 o'clock in the afternoon, and the following action was taken upon the several articles in the warrant : -
ARTICLE I. To choose a moderator to preside at said meeting.
Edward M. Bent was chosen Moderator by ballot, and the check-list was used in checking the names of voters.

ARTICLE 2. To hear and act upon the report of the Committee appointed at the last Annual Town Meeting, to take into consideration the matter of a celebration of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the incorporation of the town, and to see if the town will do or act anything relating to such celebration and appropriate money therefor.
The report of the Committee was accepted and adopted ; and it was unanimously voted that the sum of fifteen hundred dollars be granted, appropriated, and raised by taxation, for the purpose of celebrating the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the incor- poration of the town of Medfield.
ARTICLE 3. To see if the town will set apart a lot in the Cemetery to be used as a soldiers' burial lot, or do or act anything relating thereto.
Voted, That the Cemetery Committee be, and they are, instructed to convey to Moses Ellis Post No. 117, G. A. R., a lot of land in the Town Cemetery to be used for the burial of soldiers dying in Medfield and having no other place of burial.
All the articles having been acted upon, the meeting was dissolved.
