Report of Selectmen.
There has not been any permanent road building done in town the past year. The Selectmen feel that it would be advisable for the town to appropriate money for this purpose during the coming year. There are some streets where it is very much needed. At the last annual meeting the town appointed an advisory committee to work with the Selectmen and see what streets they would recommend be- ing repaired or rebuilt first. Various streets were visited and it was the unanimous opinion of the Selectmen and this committee that Walnut street from the top of the hill near Albert Manley's to the Easton line, and Copeland street from the Brockton line to Main street near Pine Hill Cemetery, were mostly in need of attention. It was also suggested that the Selectmen take the matter up with the County Commissioners. This was done and the Commis- sioners are considering the streets above mentioned.
At the last annual meeting $1000 was appropriated for a new sidewalk on North Elm street, and $300 for repairing the sidewalk on Main street from West Centre street to Howard street, the work to be out to contract. Bids were asked for but none were received, and later the sidewalk on North Elm street was started and will be completed this vear.
The Selectmen are of the opinion that the town should purchase some kind of road machinery to be used in taking care of the streets of the town.
JAMES A. HEMENWAY, WALTER C. WHITING, ALBERT D. BARKER,
Report of Superintendent of Streets.
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:
Gentlemen :
I herewith submit the annual report of the Superin- tendent of Streets of West Bridgewater. We have scraped all of our roads at least twice, and some have been dragged and scraped several times. Throughout the season a great amount of gravel patching has been done, practically every street in the Town receiving some attention along this line of work. We have placed a large amount of gravel on what we considered were some of our poorest streets. This gravel has been put on from eight to ten inches deep and spans the full width of the traveled road, an average of approximately eighteen feet in width. We have partially gravelled River Street, Bryant Street, Ash, South Elm, Howard, Old Crescent, East, Walnut and West Streets. We have gravelled all of Union Street from East Street to the town line. We also placed sixty-one yards (loads) on Thayer Avenue. A great amount of labor was put in in repairing the shoulders on our "Black Roads", most of the work being done on Belmont and Matfield Streets, some on North Elm and West Centre Streets. We have placed one hundred and fourteen feet of twelve-inch iron pipe under River, Ash, and South Elm Streets for drainage.
During the season we did a lot of Coal Patching on our permanent roads, using twenty-five tons of 1/2 inch stone and two hundred and fifty gallons of Tarvia. More of this work must be done to save our roads.
86
The sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500) was appro- priated for cinders on Maolis Avenue. The appropriation was not enough to complete the work. It should be com- pleted.
One Thousand Dollars ($1000) was appropriated for Calcium Chloride and its distribution. We purchased thirty (30) tons. The supply was inadequate to satisfy the wants of all.
One Thousand Dollars ($1000) was appropriated for a Seal Coat on Matfield and Belmont Streets. This work was attended to and about one-half inch was added to these roads.
One Thousand Dollars ($1000) was also appropriated for a Tarvia road on South Elm Street. About one thous- and feet was constructed, connecting with a piece built under Chapter 81. This piece of road extends from Lincoln Street to Pleasant Street.
The sidewalk at the corner of Main and West Centre Streets has been cut off, making it safer for all traffic. We have also built a piece of walk on Matfield Street. We also repaired the dangerous curve on Howard Street.
One Thousand Dollars ($1000) was appropriated for street signs and bridges. Every post and iron sign has been painted and the letters and panels drawn. Some of the iron signs have been repaired and replaced, and a few of the old posts replaced with new ones. We made extensive repairs on Clark's Bridge on West Street in July after one of the hard rains. We did a lot of work on the West Centre Street Bridge, Arch Street Bridge, and the two bridges on Maple Street. We also put up a lot of railing on Maple Street. Some new rails were placed on the Walnut Street Bridge. The North Elm Street Railroad Bridge has been replanked and otherwise repaired and is in fine condition, and should last a long time.
