BOARD OF ASSESSORS,

Report of the Trustees of the Public Library

The use of the Public Library has grown the past year beyond all precedent. The number of books borrowed in 1933 (during which time the Library was open 100 days) exceeded 46,000 volumes, more than 10,000 in excess of 1932. This represents a 27.9% increase over last year and an approximately 15 per capita circulation,-a fine show- ing. Some may say that this large increase is due mainly to unemployment, but there seems to be a substantial num- ber of older retired business and professional people who will, no doubt, become "permanent" readers-and the ratio of educational reading, especially in the grade schools, shows a substantial increase.

Books on economics, world affairs and psychology have been sought-and found. We have been fortunate in hav- ing been able to add 558 books, 511 by purchase and 47 by way of gift. To Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Puffer, especially, we extend our thanks for useful book gifts.

One of our greatest needs is an additional sectional book case on which to place special types of book col- lections.

Another ever-present need is that of enlarged reading room facilities.

Besides the Elmville branch which has functioned as usual, very satisfactorily under the competent care of Mrs.

92

Snell, another deposit of books has been made recently in Jerusalem under the supervision of Miss Darling at the school. This is a new venture and, we trust, will prove helpful and successful.

Naturally, we are desirous of maintaining our standard of excellence in all departments. Due to the huge increase in business, in order to do this, it will be necessary to em- ploy our part time assistant fully as much as in the past as well as to devote some time outside of library hours to library "housekeeping."

To all who have so willingly co-operated with us during this year of test, we extend our hearty thanks.

CHARLOTTE L. WILLIAMS.
