GROWTH AND CIRCULATION
It is a pleasure to report a growth not only in the number of books added but also in the quantity and quality of those circulated. During the year, 480 volumes have been added to our library, of which 388 have been by purchase and 92 by way of gift. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of several friends in presenting us with such usable material.
The circulation for the year 1930 was 23,600, a gain of 1,240 over any previous year. This means that an average of over 7 books apiece have been taken by each of the 3,000 inhabitants. As a matter of fact, less than 1,000 people actually are registered patrons. We shall be glad to serve a still larger public. Each person may find something to his taste.
The school circulation shows a slight loss due, no doubt, in part to the installation of a library at the High School. We urge each teacher having school collections to report the total circulation of books in her room so that our records may be complete.
IMPROVEMENTS AND NEEDS
A new sectional book case has made possible a more satisfactory arrangement of current fiction, so that readers may readily locate different types of stories.
Worthy of special mention in connection with the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Col- ony is our attractive and helpful Pictorial Map of Massa- chusetts, a collection of Colonial pictures sponsored by the Boston Herald, the purchase of a History of Massachusetts (in five volumes), edited by Albert Bushnell Hart, and the presentation to us of much valuable material by the Massa- chusetts Tercentenary Commission.
Our greatest need is still added space for display pur- poses. A magazine rack would also help. In conclusion, we
97
extend our sincere thanks to all who have in any way co- operated in making 1930 the best year yet.
CHARLOTTE L. WILLIAMS.
