willing and efficient help. We feel that the band has become definitely established this year and has taken its place as a regular school activity.
The children in our Elementary Schools have made excellent progress in music because of the time allotment and the excellent cooperation of our grade teachers. Until recently the Junior High School has not continued the good work of the lower grades, because the time alloted to music was limited to what little time the Supervisor had left from her other duties. This year, Mr. Holmes has taught music in the seventh grade and has carried on several successful projects with seventh and eighth grade children. With his help, I am sure we can strengthen this part of our program.
As a summary I list a few of the music activities for the year.
Rumpelstiltskin, operetta given by children of Aga- wam Center School
The Annual Songfest by the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grades of Agawam
Concert by a Choir of North Agawam Children at the Hotel Bridgeway for the Music Clubs
Junior High School Glee Club participation in the Massachusetts State Musical Festival at Northamp- ton
Recital of Chorus and Orchestra for Graduation
Band Performances at Football and Basketball games Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta given by the High School
Special Assembly Programs
Respectfully submitted, RUTH A. PERRY Supervisor of Music

REPORT OF THE ART DEPARTMENT
To the Superintendent of Schools :
In the Agawam Elementary Schools the art and handwork this past year has been planned to meet modern objectives in education. Drawing and Painting, Design, Lettering, Construction and Art Appreciation have all been made a part of the subject matter of the grade, and the interests and activities of the child.
A new Course of Study in Art is being prepared, and it is hoped that it may be in the hands of the Teachers of grades 1 to 6 by next September. A similar syllabus for the Junior and Senior High Art will follow.
In the Junior and Senior High Art classes various units of work have been carried out as needs and interests have motivated.
Scenery and posters were made for the operetta "Pi- rates of Penzance", decorations for the Junior Cabaret, Yearbook and "Mirror" covers and illustrations, and last spring we conducted our annual S.P.C.A. Poster Contest.
"The Christmas Story" in tableau form, was presented as the Christmas Assembly Program in cooperation with the High School Dramatic Club.
November 1-7 "Art Week" was observed by several special features. Committees from the Art Department arranged special bulletin boards, four exhibitions of spe- cial interest, and conducted an Art Quiz in the Senior High.

The Agawam Woman's Club Art Award was won this year by Eleanor Scagni and Elroy Benjamin both of the Class of 1940.
Trips to the Springfield Art Museums were made by the Art Appreciation Class of the High School, which was especially fortunate this year in seeing the famous exhibi- tion of "Old Masters" from the World's Fair Exhibit. We are grateful to the Museum Staff for their guidance.
The annual exhibition of art and handwork was held in June.
Respectfully submitted, MARY M. CROWLEY, Supervisor of Art
