Mr. Mitchell wished to record the intention of the Board of Public Works to continue the twelve inch water main in Gray Street but felt that this year the fire pro- tection around the High School and the Junior High School East were more important.

Voted: (Unanimously) That the sum of eleven thou- sand (11,000) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the widening and improving of Mill Brook for storm drain purposes said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the Board of Public Works.

Voted: (Unanimously) That for the purpose of ac- quiring additional snow removal equipment the sum of ten thousand eight hundred thirty (10,830) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the purchase of two trac- tors with two tractor plows, said sum to be raised by gen- eral tax and expended under the direction of the Board of Public Works.

That the sum of four thou- sand five hundred thirty-five (4,535) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for the relocation, alteration, construc- tion of, and specific repairs, including land damages, if any, upon all or any portion of the way known as Court Street, extending from Massachusetts Avenue to Court Street Place as now existing or as hereafter altered and as more particularly described in Article 23 of the War- rant, under the provisions of law authorizing the assess- ment of betterments, or otherwise, as made and reported by the Joint Board of Selectmen and Board of Public Works; said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the Board of Public Works.

Article 25 taken up. (Purchase of Land for Street Purposes)


Voted: (Unanimously) That the Board of Selectmen be and hereby is authorized and empowered on behalf of the Town to acquire by purchase, eminent domain or otherwise, for street purposes, all or any portion or por- tions of the various parcels of land as severally owned and more particularly described in Article 25 of the War- rant and that the sum of five hundred (500) dollars be and hereby is appropriated for such purpose, said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of said Board.


Article 26 taken up. (General Laws: Vacation for Police and Firemen)


Voted: (Unanimously) That Section 111A of Chapter 41 of the General Laws as amended by chapter 107 of the Acts of 1934 (which reads as follows: "Section 111A. In any Town which accepts this section, all members of its regular or permanent police or fire force may be granted a vacation of not less than two weeks during each year of their employment, without loss of pay") be and hereby is accepted.

The recommendation of the Finance Committee being put before the Meeting it was

Voted: (Unanimously) That the town hereby in- structs its Board of Selectmen to grant one-half holiday in each week without loss of pay to the employees of the Town including laborers, mechanics and all other classes of workmen employed by the Town.

Charles M. Sawyer offered a substitute motion which, not being seconded, was not put before the meeting.

Article 30 taken up. (Truck for Park Department)


The following substitute motion was offered by John B. Byrne which put before the meeting was lost by a standing vote 68 in favor and 85 in opposition, Messrs. Converse, Rugg, and Washburn acting as tellers.


That the sum of $553.00 be and hereby is appro- priated for the purchase of a new truck for the Park De- partment, said sum to be raised by general tax and ex- pended under the direction of the Park Department.


The recommendation as made by the Finance Com- mittee being put before the meeting it was


Voted: That the Town do not appropriate the sum of five hundred fifty-three ($553) dollars or any other sum for the purchase of a half-ton truck for the use of the Park Department.


Article 31 taken up. (Fireproof Stairways in Russell School)


Voted: That the Town do not appropriate the sum of seven thousand ($7,000) dollars or any other sum for the purpose of installing fireproof stairways in the Rus- sell School building and alterations and expenses in con- nection therewith.

ARLINGTON TOWN REPORT


April 3, 1935.


Pursuant to the vote of adjournment on March 27, 1935 the Town Meeting Members met in the Town Hall on Wednesday, April 3, 1935 notices having been sent by mail by the Town Clerk seven days before the meeting. A notice was published in the local paper.


Lists of the duly qualified Town Meeting Members was used at the entrances of the meeting place and were in charge of Philip T. Robinson and James E. Sweeney.


The check lists filed with the Town Clerk at the close of the meeting showed that one hundred and ninety- two members attended the meeting.


James C. Carr, stenographer, was sworn by the Town Clerk to the faithful performance of his duties.


The Moderator declaring a quorum present the meet- ing was called to order at 8:07 P.M.


Town Meeting Members not already sworn were sworn by the Moderator.


On motion of Selectman Lowe:


Voted: (Unanimously) That if the business calling this meeting is not disposed of on this date the meeting adjourn to Wednesday evening, April 10th at 8:00 o'clock.
