It is unfortunate that the schools are so scattered as to make the holding of teachers' meetings for the study of some of the radical changes impracticable. The teachers labor at a disad- vantage as does the supervisor.

17

Every lesson should have a definite object, definitely planned. When vocal instruction is conducted in so light a way that the time spent upon it is looked upon as a recreation period, it is time wasted. When the instruction is presented in a clear, interesting manner, the mountains become mole-hills and the music period, without suffering, becomes recreation.

The four essentials of music instruction in the public schools are these :- conceptions of good music, voice training, sight singing, and musical interpretation. These go side by side and are the lines upon which we are working.

I feel the Westford teachers have made a gain this year in teaching this subject, and I wish to thank them for the interest they have shown in the changes we have made, and for their able assistance in carrying them out.

Respectfully submitted,

MARY B. RAYNES,

Supervisor of Music.

REPORT OF MEDICAL INSPECTOR.

Gentlemen of the School Committee:

I respectfully submit the following report concerning the schools of Westford for the year ending February 1, 1913.

I have visited all the schools and made general examina- tions to determine the fitness of each pupil to attend school. I have also made various examinations of the different schools at the call. either of the teacher, Superintendent, or one of the com- mittee. At these inspections, I have examined over eight hun- dred pupils, and found the general health and condition of the schools, as a whole, showing an improvement over the previous year. There is, however, a chance for improvement, especially in the quick response of the parents in the treatment of the various disorders for which the children are necessarily sent out. A more willing co-operation on the part of the parents would have saved the children in several cases much time lost from their school work.

In this last year, the Sargent School was fumigated for a case of diphtheria, also the Cameron School for the same cause.

I should like to suggest to the School Committee, that they introduce throughout the schools, five or ten minute periods of calisthenics during the long sessions.

I hope, during the coming year, the parents will still keep a strict watch on their children, and after receiving the required notices of their afflictions from the School Physician, will act promptly in having them attended to, thus greatly helping the child and the school as a whole.

Respectfully submitted,

DR. C. A. BLANEY.

Academic Course :- College or Normal School preparatory requirements may be met by pupils who begin this course in season and who make judicious selections from the subjects offered. No time may be lost in selecting subjects, and only the most faithful work will avail. Catalogues of higher institutions should be at hand and there should be frequent conferences with the principal and assistant teachers, who will familiarize them- selves with the ever shifting requirements of these institutions.

Combinations of classes will be effected wherever possible in order to reduce the number of daily recitations. Third and fourth year classes will be offered physics and chemistry on alternating years, for instance.

Music is required of all pupils throughout the course.
