A POEM On the Rebuke of GOD's Hand In the euful Defelation made by

F I R E

In the Town of

Boston,

On the 20th Day of March, 1760,

By which, in about 6 or 7 Hours, between three and four hundred . Buildings were confumed :---- To which is added, Some brief Hints on the great Conflagration gation of all Things.

--- Shall there be Evil in a City

T Sing th' Almighty GOD, whole awful Hand 1 Dipertes Judgments over Sea and Land : He rales the World by bis unerring Skill, And goreras us according to his Will. His Providence, which be has often wrought, Is far beyond the meft fagacious Thought. His Wars feem dark to us, and quite unknown ; Yes, ipot'e's Judice dwells before his Throne : To face his Merry is his dear Delight ; And, fince 'tis fo, be orders all Things right .--- Ha Judgments oftentimes he does retard, While we run on in Sin and don't regerd ; And when he fends them then we think He's hard : But pray examine, think on what's the Caufe, Isn't iz Contempe of his moft righteous Laws ? Theo can we clear ourfelves, a'n't we to blame Was fin without Remorfe, and caft of Shame And par no Rev'rence to his holy Name ?--- This'is the Confe He fent sbis Judgment down, This cajal Deflation ! on the Town. The North-weg-wind, and Flame he did employ, Our tlately Habitations to deftroy. What ipacious Structures flood but th' other Day, And now they all in Heaps of Afhes lay I know not how to write, or to exprefs The awful Time, or paint the fad Diftreis Of thofe our Friends who did to Bed retire And wak'd furrounded by a Flame of Fire !-- That Geh acá Dying forse'd to quit theis Beds And then, perhaps, Do where to lay their Heads. . O wh.z: Confufion ! what tremendous Grief ! While mercie's Flames afirded no Relief ! W'bole Streets of Houfes foon embrac'd the Ground, Wheb left the Marks of fad Deftruction round ! And Goods, in raft Repefifories ftor'd, Were chief confem'd, in burning Walls immur'd ! W'e furore in vam, we could not ftop irs Force V. ti'e GOD prevail'd, and did direct its Courfe. O ! with what Grief did we lift up our Eyes, To is the Flames in rolling Volumes rife, Andsmoke fromBuildings cloud the fparkling Skies! ) La awful Emblem we did then bebold Of the Great Day, from ancient Dare foretold !-. ' W'hes the bright Sus, that radiant thining Car Whole lucid Splendor darkens ev'ry Star, No more thall roll his Courfe around the Globe, ut mourn our Fate wrap'd in a fable Robe,

MARCON

the LORD bath not done it ?-...

The Moon will ceafe to give her fplendent Ray 3 (While Stars are darken'd thro' the milky Way) The fhining Luftre the fo often fhed Will then be cover'd in a crimfon Red, While o'er her Face a fanguine Mantle's fpread. Stars will forfake their Spheres and fall from Heav'n, And thro' the Earth the fcarter'd Flames be driv'n. The Elements fhall melt with fervent Heat, While he. ty Trains of awful Judgments meet All Nature's final Ruin to compleat .-- The hetvy Rocks into the Air are hurl'd, And Horror feizes all the guilty World :-- Thoufands of Serapbs through the Ather fly, Our JUDGE's Chariot then is haft'ning nigh And with its Swiftnefs burns along the Sky. Tremble, O Earth, Inhabitants admire To fee your JUDGE defcend in flaming Fire ! And while you fhudder, O lift up your Eyes I ~Lequious Angels guard him through the Skies : fparkling Azure cleaves to make Him Way, And now comes on the great Tribunal Day :--- All Nature owns her Great Creator --- now The tow'ring Forefts and the Mountains bow, The impelting Hills diffolve in Flames of Fire szing Comets ready to expire -- .. Que the ALMIGHTY's Vengeance now difplays, He in his Wrath will kindle all his Rays And fet the fpacious Univerfe on hlaze ;-- "Till Nature thall diffolve, and quite expire, In one continuat Made of flaring Fire + O may we then be found at his Right-Hand, And there rejoicing and triumphant ftand ; While he thall doom the Nations of the Land -- ). To"endlefs Pain, or everlafting Reft ! Then may we hear thofe joyful Words exprefs'd, Come my beloved, faithful, juf and true, Pofofs the Realm which was prepar'd for you Before the World ber firfl Foundation kneww. Free-Grace forever then we fhall adore, Where earthly Troubles will moleft no more,

MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS, 1760.

The Subscribers, a committee appointed by the Government for the Purposes aforesaid, do hereby certify that the Accounts ex- hibited of the Loss in Personal Estate, were inspected with the greatest Care and Exactness ; and where there was Reason to apprehend any were exaggerated, proper Deductions were made.

The Sufferers were critically examined relative to said Accounts which being now duly liquidated, and amounting together to the sum of Twenty Eight Thousand and Eight pounds, Ten shillings and Seven pence. Lawful Money of this Province equal Twenty One Thousand and Six pounds, Seven Shillings & Eleven pence,- Farthing, Sterling as appears by the foregoing Account, We verily believe to fall rather short of than exceed the real Loss.

An Estimate of the Loss in Real Estate was carefully made, at the Request of Selectmen, a part of this Committee by the Assess- ors of the Town of Boston, Persons whose office led them to a thorough Acquaintance with the value of said Estates; which agreable to their Estimation amounts to Forty Three Thonsand One Hundred and Three pounds, Sixteen Shilling and Eight Pence, Lawful Money of this Province equal to Thirty Two Thonsand, Three Hundred Twenty Seven Pounds, Seventeen Shillings and Six Pence Sterling as appears by their Oath annexed.

We further Certify that Monies already received in Aid of the Sufferers amount to Seventeen Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty Six Ponnds, Fifteen Shillings, and Eight Pence Lawful Money of this Province, equal to Thirteen Thousand, Three Hundred, Seventeen Ponnds, Eleven Shillings, & Nine Pence, Sterling ; agreable to the Account herewith exhibited.

We, the Subscribers whose Office it is to value the Estates in order to apportion the Taxes from Year to Year, laid for the Support of the Government, at the desire of the Selectmen, did soon after the Fire on the 20th of March last (upon an actual & careful survey of the Rnins) estimate the Loss on the Real Estates to amount at least to Forty Three Thousand, One Hun- dred & Three ponnds, Sixteen Shillings & Eight pence Lawful money of this Province equal to Thirty Two Thousand Three Hundred Twenty Seven pounds, Seventeen Shillings & Six pence

WM TORREY JON. BROWN

The Subscriber, Clerk to the Selectmen & Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Boston, appointed by the Government for the Purposes aforcsaid, do declarc, that I was from the Begin- ning with them at their Meeting, to receive & pass upon the Accounts ; That the Gentlemen sitting by small Committees & no minutes being made what particular Gentleman each Account was passed before, it is impossible for them to swear one for the other. But I verily believe that the Accounts were by them passed with great care & exactness more especially where an Account was Suspected & am of opinion the Account of the Personal Estate rather falls short of than exceeds the Real Loss to the truth whereof I make Oath Accordingly this Twenty Ninth day of November 1760.
