Judge Sewall from the Committee appointed to prepare the Draft of a Bill to be presented to the Great and General Court, for Con- firming the Doings of this Committee with regard to laying out the Streets &c reported the same - which was read and approved by the Committee.

John Erving, Esqr. from the Committee on Milk Street &c make the following Report : Vizt.

The Committee to whom was referred the Consideration of what Alteration it may be necessary to make in Milk Street, have viewed said Street and find if it should be laid out agreeable to the report made by a Committee the 11th of April last, it will be very Expensive to the Town as well as very detrimental to the Proprietors. especially on the North side of said Street.

They would therefore propose that the North side of the Street be laid out in the following manner, that Twelve & half feet be taken from the Land to the North West Corner of Mr Bourns house. from this point (where a Stake is fixed) the street to run on a Line to the Eastward to a Stake near the Cinque in Mr Calef's Land, from thence on a Line to the South East Corner of Colo. They would propose the South side of said Street to be laid out in the following manner, that it run on a Line from the North East Corner of Mr Bourns house to a Stake near Mr Dowse's Land, opposite to, and at 40 feet distance from the Stake afore- said nigh the Cinque in Mr Calefs Land, from thence on a Line to a Stake in Mr Prouts Land, opposite to and at Forty feet dis- tance from the South East Corner of Colo. Wendells Brick Wall, from thence on a Line to Battery March to Strike said Street at Forty feet distance from the Stake placed at the North East Corner of Milk Street.

These Lines Compleat the Street and will render it very com-

modius, the Committee have accordingly cansed the Street to be Staked out, and do now exhibit a Plan agreeable thereto.

The Committee propose that the Cinque before mentioned on the North side of Milk Street lying in the aforesaid Land of the aforesaid Calef should be fenced off and be no longer within private Property that it may be come at more readily to be cleansed when necessary and for this purpose that there be taken from said Calefs Land a Peiee measuring Twelve feet on said Milk Street and running back of that Wedth fourteen feet.

The Committee further report that the Street called Battery March be continned from Milk Street towards Mr Hallowells upon the same direction with the Pavement now there, said Pave- ment to make the West side of the Street, and that it be made Forty feet wide by taking in part of the ship yard or Eastern side for that purpose.

'The Committee further report that the Street called Bread Street leading from Maekrel Lane to the lower part of Milk Street be Widened to Thirty feet by taking in the Land on the East side of said Street, excepting the Land that is already staked out on the West side JOHN ERVING by order

GREEN & RUSSELL'S BOSTON POST BOY & ADVERTISER

Boston March 24. 1760.

Between 11 and 12 o'Clock at Noon on Monday last, a Fire broke out at the West Part of the Town, New Boston so called, by some Accident, whereby a Joiner's Shop was consumed, and a large Dwelling-House adjoining thereto, was a great Part of it, destroyed, and many Things therein Burnt ; and several other Houses innch damaged in the Neighbourhood : The Wind blowing very high at N. East, it was a considerable Time before it was ex- tinguished : The Roof of the West-Meeting-House catched on Fire in several Places - But by the Dexterity of the People, and a con- stant supply of Water, a Stop was at length put to it - And, on the Day following, between X and 11 o'Clock in the Forenoon, a Store at the upper End of Mr Griffin's wharf, the Chamber of which was improved as a Laboratory by the Detachment of His Majesty's Train of Royal artillery now here, catched on Fire by some Accident ; the Fire soon got to some Powder that was there- in, whereby the Building blew up, and some of the Implements, Small-arms, and Stores, were destroyed ; tho' the Damage to the Train was not so great as it has been reported, or as it was first imagined to be ; four or five Men, who were at work in the Time of the Explosion, were wounded, and two of them very much burnt. In the under Part of the Store, a Variety of Merchandize, Provisions, Salt, etc. belonging to Mr Griffin, were consumed or damaged, which, with the Building, makes the Loss very great to him. A Carpenter's shop was burnt and a Blacksmith's much damaged : This last between the Place where the Fire began, and the Warehouses on the lower End of the Wharf, wherein were de- posited the chief of the Artillery-Stores; but the Wind being moderate, and a Plenty of Water, the Tide being up, a Communi- cation of the Flames with those Stores was, by the Vigilance of the People, seasonably prevented : One or two of the Granada Shells, and a few Small-arms went off during the Fire : But, thro' Divine Favour, no lives were lost. The Explosion was so great at first that a considerable Shock was felt even to the extreme Parts of the Town.
