PREFACE
This compilation of information from ship's registers and enrollments of the District of Machias is a product of the Maine unit of Survey of Federal Archives, a Work Projects Administration project sponsored by the National Archives, Washington, D. C., under the direction of Philip M. Hamer, Chief of the Division of Reference, The National Archives, and Helen I. Twombly, Director, Division of Community Service Programs in Maine.
Among the many valuable old records to be found in Maine are the certificates of registry and enrollments of American vessels. The data found in these documents has been admittedly of considerable value to research scholars. In the past it has been difficult to obtain the information about the vessels and their owners. For the purpose of making this information more accessible the project has grouped together information from both registers and enrollments in an attempt to give as complete a history as possible of each ship documented in a particular district. All information has been transcribed as accurately as possible from the original documents in the volumes stored in the customhouses throughout the State. If we have erred at all on the side of accuracy, it should be understood that it is intended to record only the facts as we have found them and has given us an opportunity to correct some of the errors which crept into the forum work. Every effort has been made to locate any missing information and to verify conclusive data, and the accumulative information has been an arduous task.
For each vessel there is a separate entry, the entries are arranged within each, alphabetically by names of vessols, and to gach entry, for indexing and reference purposes is assigned an entry number. The information in each entry includes, name of vessel, rig or type, hailing port, place and date of building and name of builder, tonnage, dimensions, type of document, names of owners, shares owned, occupation and resi- dence of owner, name and residence of master, and any changes in rig, tonnage, hailing port are noted. Finally, any available information regarding the final disposition of the vessel.
In the preparation of this work we have become deeply indebted to many people, to Joseph T. Sylvester, Collector of the Headquarters Port of the District, W. E. Barrows, Assistant Collector, the custodians of records at the various customhouses, The Maine Historical Society, Portland, and the libraries in the State, who have assisted by their cooperation and advice, and to all these we extend thanks. The publi- cation would not be possible but for the diligence of the office staff and the helpful counsel given by Philip M. Hamer, National Director.
The sketches reproduced in the publication are of old ships built in Maine. The one on the cover-page is a replica of the ship that appears on the first registers and enrollments of the United States Merchant Marine. They were executed for the volume by Flora G. Merchant and H. John Newman.

INTRODUCTION
The Customs District of Machias, Massachusetts, was created by Act of July 31, 1789, as Number III of fourteen collection districts. It was one of the districts mentioned in the very first Customs Act of 1790 ... Act of March 2, 1799, further enacted, that in the State of Massachusetts "For each of the Districts of Machias and Passamaquoddy shall be appointed a colloctor to reside at the ports of Machias and Passamaquoddy, respectively." At that time the very historic town of Machias (Inc. 1784), situatod between the Ponobscot and St. Croix Rivers, was the only incorporated town in that arca and thoreforo made the port of ontry. It was an immense town which included the shore towns of Machiasport and East Machias until 1826, and the two interior towns of Whitneyville, set off in 1845, and Marshfiold, set off in 1846. In these days, Machias had a large foreign trade, and a Spanish vice consul.
The name was changed to District of Machias, Maine, by Act of March 3, 1820. Its territorial limits embraced the southorly shores of Washington County from Moose Covo in the town of Trescott wostorly to the Hancock line.
There was no changes in the district from 1790 to 1913. It novor had a legal port of delivery, yot as other shore towns were settled and incorporated, officers wore stationed in the towns that had foreign commerce. Tho Registrar of the Treasury's list of ports, published in 1876, shows the following ports of hail, in the order of their in- corporation; Stoubon, 1795; Columbia Falls (part of Columbia), 1796; Harrington, 1797; Jonesborough, 1809; Cherryfield, 1816; Whitnoy, 1825; Cutler, 1826; Machinsport and East Machiasport, 1826; Jonosport, 1832; and Millbridge, 1848.
T. D. 5639 shows that doputios wore stationed at Jonosport and Chorryfield in 1883, at Jonesport in 1884, and Millbridge in 1887. Captain Jeremiah O'Brion, Commander-in-Chief of the Massachusetts Stato Navy, and an officer in tho Revolution was one of the first Deputy Collectors appointod.
On July 1, 1913, this district was merged with all the other districts into District I, Maino and Now Hampshire. District I, includes all of Maine and Now Hampshire, with the exception of County Coos. The port of Machias was made a port of entry in the now district, and Jones- port, Millbridge, and Cutler were made independent stations. Cutler remained an independent station until Fobrurary, 1921, when it was closed and the business handled by Machias. The office was later ro- opened and annoxed to the port of Eastport.
During the carly days the Millbridge office had a great deal of business and its clearanco books showed square riggors cloaring with lumber cargocs for many parts of the world. It still has a fow important cargoes, which are handled at Jonesport.
Machiasport the newest customs station opened in mid-summer of 1934 and placed under Jonosport, was originally a part of the port of Machias which handled all of its business until 1925.
Jonesport remained an independent customs station until 1925, and in recent times has always had more customs business than any other port of the old Machias district. Meanwhile business had boon steadily do- clining at Machias, and from Fob. 1921 to Sept. 1925, its most important activity was the handling of imports at Cutler. In 1935, Jonesport was made a port of entry, and the ono hundred thirty-five year old office at Machias was closed, and its business turned over to Jone sport.
iii
All inactive records of the District of Mfachias dating from 1780 are now in the custody of the Collector of Customs at the headquarters port in Portland. It has boon possible in ovory instance to secure from thom tho information of both the registers and enrollments for this publication. A. fow records issued prior to that dato aro apparently not in oxistonco.
Because of the great number of ship's rogistors and enrollments issued in this district, it has been found necessary to publish the material in two parts. Part I includes title page, table of contents, proface, introduction, Collectors of Customs, tabulations and tables, explanatory notes, skotchos of Maine built ships, abstracts of rogistors and enrollments, from A to K inclusive, and lists of publications pro- parod by the project. Part II includes title pago, entries from L to Z, and index for both volumes.
To avoid repetition of information and at the same time to mako clear to the roador the change in documentation, data on the first docu- mont has boon roproduced in full, but in listing subsequent documentations of the same vossol, identical information has boon omitted. Thus, other ontrios include only namos, places, dimensions, ctc., which differ from those on the procoding document. Whonever masters, owners, and sharos have been the samo in a procoding document, it is specified by ... the "samo". In entries where the change of owners and shares has been so slight that it would conserve spaco by not rolisting all the owners, the following terms have boon used: Owners: samo, with the exception of (namo, shares and residence of new owners), in lieu of (namo and share of the previous omor ): Owners: samo, with oxcoption of shares (amount of shares), transferred from (name of owner ) to (name of other owner ). Where more than one type of document (register and. enrollment) is issued successivoly without any change in owners, master, rig, etc., space has boon conserved by combining information as follows: Registorod, No. 164, Juno 18, 1886; Enrolled, No. 95, Oct. 14, 1886; No. 105, Doc. 6, 1886, at Machias. Owners: samo. Mastor: samo.
Errors in rogistors ' and enrollmonts have been checked against the original documents, and when they were obviously errors in recording, it has boon advisable te copy the information exactly as written followed by (sic). Spelling of names of owners, masters, and ships, also all other data has boon copied exactly as written on the original documents with the exception of the names of cities and towns, which have boon made to conform with present day spelling. It has boon assumed that all documents are permanent unless otherwise noted. Permanent documents aro issued within districts comprehending the home port of the vessel; temporary documents are issued at other than a vossol's home port to permit a vossol to make a change from foreign to coasting trado. This temporary document has the force and effect of a permanent one, the only restriction boing that the formor must be exchanged for a permanent one within ton days of the arrival of the vessel at its homo port of docu- montation.
Throughout the publication, to avoid ropotition, the word "Minc" has boon dolotod, it being understood that unless otherwise specified all towns and cities mentioned are located in the State of Mainc. Roforonce to a Maino port, bofore 1820, during the time when Maine was a part of Massachusetts, has boon followed by the statement within a parenthesis (now Mainc ) .
The publication of ship's registers and onrollments of the District of Machias, Maine & Now Hampshire has been compiled by the staff of The National Archivos Project in Maine, as successors to the nationwide Survoy of Fodoral Archivos, Dr. Philip M. Hamer, National Director and undor the cooperating sponsor ship of the National Archives.
