1861 .... No census taken by the Compiler. -
Regarding the operations of the State Homestead Law which offers 80 acres of State Government Lands as a free Home to every settler upon them, under the most reasonable conditions of improvement, as well as the advantages offered to enterprising men, without much means to obtain any desirable quantity of Lands, the property of the Federal Govern- ment, on the merely nominal terms of the Graduated Land Laws of the United States, it is but reasonable that very many families from time to time have left Detroit to settle on farms. Several of our newly organized Northern Counties have been comparatively well settled by population thus attracted from cities and villages. This more than suppositious view of the city population might determine many, reasonably enough, to imagine that there are not as many inhabitants in the city as there were in 1859; but taking also into view the natural increase [and it may be here admitted that Detroit is a city very prolific of a multitudinous, bright eyed, rosy cheeked, long nosed population of Juveniles],-as well also the fact that many ill-stared, illy-instructed and not remarably industrious farmers return to the cities again, having failed in finding hoped for success and enjoyment at the plough. There need W little doubt that an industrious enumeration of the city, conducted scientifically, intelligently and thoroughly, would produce EIGHTY-FIVE THOUSAND inhabitants of all kinds, grades and colors. The labor is so great however, that it is enough to scare away from its performance any half-dozen ordinary office holding, or office seeking individuals, who might desire to ob- tain the pay of the Common Council for the work, provided it were allowed to be executed superficially or speculatively. In the preparation of this Directory, the Compiler has been to every family, and to many families three or four times, and a man who will have discharged a duty of this Titanic labor over a city so expansive as is Detroit, compared with her popula- tion, ought to be accorded a competency of forming a reasonable number of correct ideas in relation to his work in hand.
The reader is respectfully referred for further interesting Statistical particulars, to the following summary extracted from the always masterly annual report of Robert E. Roberts, Baq., Secretary, of the Detroit Board Water Works.
On application to Mr. Roberts, it is presumed that any stranger would be cheerfully pre- ponted by him with a copy of the valuable Report here alluded to, of the condition of the Water Works Department, the management of which in all the details reflects the highest credit on the Commissioners, and their appointed officers.

Frederick A. Stokes, Merchant.
.
This Gentleman, as successor in the already widely known Wholesale Grocery Trade of Hon. N. P. Jacobs, corner Jefferson avenue and Wayne Sts, generously initiates our Adver- tising Department. We are indebted to him. for many favors, which we should be glad effectively to reciprocate. We have however discovered that although comparatively a young man, Mr. Stokes is an old Wine Merchant, and heavy importer, and has stocks of old Vin- tages, both of superior flavored Wines and Brandies, wich never decay by age. Mrs. S. withal though we met him a Church going, is a very cheerful companionable gentleman.
The Detroit Directory. Johnston's.
We should write a special recommendatory notice of our Johnston's Detroit General Directory, but that we are not paid for doing so, and therefore request everybody to examine for himself, as a committee of one. He must certainly report favorably, and will move him- self and everybody else to extend to us an expected generous patronage. Assist us at least to be promptly paid, for our labors have been Herculean and unmeritting, and only very remotely known to, or imagined by any except the Maker of the People ! There are a few Hundreds of Dollars of bad debts on former editions, and we should be as good-naturedly, willing as over to receive from the defaulters payment on old accounts, and open a new leaf.
Ship Building.
We observe a very stately Brig on page 68, telling everybody pretty plainly to come up and look at it. See advertisements of Mesers. Campbell & Owen.
Lumber Merchants.
Many changes have occurred in Firms at the West End. The Messrs. Brooks & Adams and N. W. Brooks are annually enlarging their business. Large quantities of pine lumber pass from their yards to the interior of the State by the Michigan Central R. R. which as also the Grand Trunk passes through one of their yards. See page 68. On page 64 will be noticed the card of our always constant friend Henry E. Benson, Esq., whose lumbering operations are very extensive. Mr. Benson's yard is located above the Round House, on Atwater Street East.
Cuttlery,
The Factory of Mr. Samuel Shaw at 100 Woodbridge St. East, deserves special notice. Parties suffering from Hernia [the Doctors should all know] should obtain safe and reliable Trusses from him.
Detroit Locomotive Works.
This Establishment should be in full blast in the manufacture of our Locomotives. The maintainance of a few large Western Establishments, should be regarded as a discreet and beneficial policy, on the part of Railway Managers and Capitalists.
United States Type Foundry. James Connor & Sons, N. Y.
Since the advertisement of this House on page 65 was put in Type the Firm moved to their splendid new six storied establishment at Nos. 28, 80 and 82 Centre Street.

JOHNSTON'S DETROIT CITY DIRECTORY,
This establishment is Nowparid in its line of business, but as printers will discover some- thing better betimes than Nonpariel, we had better close this notice by certifying upon our honor that we have played "hard noses," with the type of James Connor & Sons, and the type of other Founders aud have always found the face of other type battered, while the type of James Connor & Sons was in no instance defaced in the least degree.
Franklin Type and Stereotype Foundry, Cincinnati, Ohio.
We have not played "hard noses" with the Founts of this House, which is a branch, we are informed, of the celebrated Type Foundry of L. Johnson & Co, of Philadelphia. A large number of the beautiful S.ereotype Cuts we have used in this Directory are from the Cincin- nati Foundry, where Mr. R. Allison is the Superintendent. See page 66.
Doctor J. W. Kermott.
This highly esteemed medical gentleman has been establishing a new Dispensary at 179 Woodward avenue. Refer to page 67.
Farrand & Sheley. DRUGS, DRUGS,-GROCERIES,-PAINTS, OILS, GLASS, &C.
Now there is no use in attempting to puff this old Established House, for verily we should be expected to be read out of good society, upon a vote of these very men themselves for exaggerating their own praise as able Merchants and honest men, so. we had better not burn our fingers, in doing more than inviting every Retailer in Michigan to call on Deacons Farrand & Sheley at 80 Woodward avenue. [See card page 67 and at page 817,] where they will also be found authorized by the Common Council to sell pure liquors for Medical purposes; and we would say he is a fool who would drink them for any other purpose.
Flagging ! Flagging ! ! Flagging ! ! !
Not a bit of it ! Just as lusty as ever we were ! It is only an affair of the splendid ap- pearance of our Detroit City Streets, since William Holloway introduced his fine Flags from his Medina Quaries some two years ago. The Establishment is now Holloway & Co., [Mr. Charles H. Irvin being the Associate.] It is, seriously, a wise policy for every property owner to have these flags laid, whether in the thoroughfares or in the remoter Streets and avenues, and we trust the Common Council who are the men elected by the people for their sagacity, good common sense and business abilities generally, will fulminate the local law against those shabby and wealthy miserables, who never desire to improve the City which nursed them into importance. An example is presented to them in the splendid walk that is laid front- ing the entire block on which Gen. Cass's residence is located on Fort Street, and in nu- merous other localities, as at Senator Chandler's and Mrs. C. Jone's, Mr. Duncan's, &c. This Firm deserves great respect indeed for its enterprise in inaugurating this improvement which gives proof of the economy and utility of superceding the old style plank walks.
Morhous & Dewey. Doors, Sash and Blinds.
Gentlemen, look for your card on page 69. How do you like it ? How do you like us ?
William Shultheis, Marble Manufacturer.
Friend ! We have erected a monument on page 69. Improve the time for the days are evil.
A. H. Smith, --- Ink and Cement, --- page 70.
This is a Detroit Manufacturer of Ink, upon an extensive scale. He has exhibited to us certificates of its superiority from the City Clerk, who uses it for the Records of the Municipality-and from several of the leading Business Firms in Law and Commerce, and having shed torrents of Ink ourself in twenty six years, no one would be warranted to doubt our competency. It has no sediment, a very jet and freely flowing fluid, well worthy of general adoption. It is preferred by judges to all other inks in the Market. It is locally due to Mr. Smith that all dealers in the article should make their purchases of A. H. Smith 166 Clifford Street. This Ink obtained Diploma at Michigan State Fair.

Exclusive Brass Founders, corner Third and Congress Sts. If local encouragement were sufficiently extended to these worthy practical founders, useless " Triangular Gongs" need not be imported from England, nor Bells from Troy. See page 70.
Charles Busch, 201 Jefferson Avenue.
Mr. Busch is one of the men who properly belong to civilized mankind. Being how- ever, an importation from " Faderland," he will always be found willing and entirely res- ponsible to all who desire to avail his services in German Exchanges. But as a dealer in every variety of HARDWARE, MECHANICS TOOLS, STOVES, GRATES, COPPER AND TIK WARE, &C , &c. He is prepared to do a very extensive City and State trade. He has the exclusive sale of a number of superior patent articles, for which see his advertisements on pages 71 and 818.
Our Furniture Manufacturers and Dealers.
·
Special attention is requested to the Advertisers' Index, and from there to the Advertise- ments of the Manufacturers and Dealers. To present any adequate idea of the wealth invested in this Department of Trade is out of the question. The magnificent Ware-Rooms must be visited. There can be no appreciable home civilization and happiness without suitable furniture. In these establishments are to be found plain and elegant articles in endless variety. We would say, that if aiding the publication of a local Directory, to facili- tate the general public be an evidence of the absence of smallness of soul, their customers will be glad to form and improve acquaintance with those gentleman.
Our Dry Goods' Importers, Jobbers and Dealers.
A list of names engaged in this all important Trade, will be noticed on reference to the ADVERTISERS' INDEX [which it should be remembered is a compartment of the General Directory of Cities, that exclusively belongs to advertisers, who aid the production of this to the general public, indispensibly useful Work]. Those gentlemen are all old familiar names of great popularity, men thoroughly acquainted with the science of the trade, and who have promptly in the Market for the City and State Wholesale and Retail Trade, every variety, in beauty of style and pattern ingenious manufacturers produce. They are all Wholesale as well as Wholesouled dealers, and except for the sake of visiting Gotham and incurring the agreeable vicissitudes and chance losses and hazards of the journey, any Village dealer can do better we believe by dealing in Detroit than by "Going East."-Refer to the ADVERTI- SERS' INDEX, page x.
