The Newspaper Press.

Fraternal acknowledgements are hereby respectfully and faithfully expressed towards the conductors of such newspapers, throughout Michigan, and in other States from whom our Directory has received a helping hand. We have printed a list of our Friends in the ADVERTISERS' INDEX, and until we have the pleasure of meeting them personally, wish them something more than their professional pleasures.

Veterinary --- Sick Horses.

A very skilful Equine Knight of the Lancet is Doctor J. C. Gregory, at 19 Griswold St., near the Capital Union School .- See page 73.

Our Attorneys and Counsellors.

Just think of a Directory Compiler, or even a Peter the Great, Pio Nono, or Louis Napol- con, puffing an Attorney ! If we were as honest as Garribaldi, we should admit that we can do without Attorneys no more than we can do without other moralizing instrumentalities. In fact, but for the codification of the general moral sentiment of mankind, in all the relations of life, into forms and axioms of law, by the legal profession, we should be enjoying exist- ence, "a law unto ourselves," beyond the hospitable regions of Kamskadale, where the eye is never disturbed by the light of the Sun. A few of those generous hearted gentlemen have aided the Publication of this Directory, for whose names and addresses please refer to the ADVERTISERS' INDEX.

JOHNSTON'S DETROIT CITY DIRECTORY,

An Elephant with Top Boots ! See page 75.

Barnum is at last Eclipsed ! This Elephantine Bucephalus, seems to enjoy the luxury amazingly of being newly shod-so do Directory Compilers. We must ourself have worn many pairs of Boots in walking more than seven times the Earth's diameter in discharging Directory duties in the City of Detroit, seldom having nearly so fine a looking pair in our service as C. C. Tyler and Co's, Elephant-No matter ! We are not a very jealous fellow. We have gotten rid of selfishness a long time ago. There is some " Gas " and " Fancy " left yet, and any one who wishes to see our Elephant can see it either in the possession of President Lincoln, General Winfield Scott, Major Anderson, or probably yet with Mr. Jim Buchanan, Ex P, Custos Rotulorum at Wheatland Pa .- and specimens of the same animal at the dazzling Regal Courts of Mr. Louis Napoleon and Mistress Victoria. The " Tyler Elephant can be seen at 83 Woodward ave, where Boots of every kind, degree, quality, style, finish and gradation of prices for Elephants tall and small, can be had at the very cheapest rates, wholesale in cases and retail in pairs. We ourself must get measured for a " Tip-top- top-pair, and we shall then make Elephantine strides for O'Regan.

The Composition Roofers.

These House Roofers have deservedly superseded the shinglers. Two of the latter hum- bugs have defrauded us out of $20 aduertising. One of them used to sell the right of a machine, and the other used to grind the shingies. Let the Composition Roofers beware, or we shall send out one of our Detectives to find out whose "shanty" leaks. Next to slating we know there is nothing more Economical, or safe, as a fire preventive, than PATENT Cox- POSITION ROOFS. For advertisements see the Index.

Saddlers and General Horse Clothing. See the Adams' Express Card, page 76.

Hardware, Wholesale and Retail.

We are not aware that we can do better than call attention of the Public to the group of Merchants in this line whose names will be found in their own INDEX TO ADVERTISEMENTS. How could we particularize everything in a General Hardware Store, from an Anchor to a Needis ! Refer to and read all the cards, it was for that they were handed in to be printed. Go into the Stores of these gentlemen and note the multitudinous articles, in indescribable variety, with which their establishments are replete, and which they desire to transfer to customers at low prices. Their Stocks are all restless to get into the secession movement. But we warn all as fast as they secede, the Union will recruit.

Flour and Produce Generally.

We should here particularize our friends, but that " Flour got very haughty," and we shall not pay for it more than commerce would warrant .- See Advertisers' Index.

"Old Cast Off Clothes !" Page 78.

Just think of that, " in the Land of Liberty !" Where nobody dares be Sans Culotte ! Oh ! that we had not allowed the death of that great philosopher, who possessed the secret of turning the paving stones into gold ! Read this advertisers' card and send him all your cast-off-clothes with something in them. We had supposed the. Detroit Ladies' Industrial Society had bought out Captain Crimmins' Business. . But this need not be our business .- See the card at page 78.

Undertakers and Coffin Manufacturers.

How can we be anything but serious on so grave a subject! We have been obliged to undertake the duty of stating that Mr. Farwell, [a very suitable name for coffin maker and UNDERTA- KER] has moved from his old place of business in Union Block Jefferson ave, to a capacious warehouse at 181 Woodward ave, where every variety of burial cases are on hand to suit the approving tastes of both the dying and the dead. We never believed that any one was dead,- really dead, but " the dead in tresspasses and sins" from which condition of death they are free- ly offered translation into " newon ss of life,"-everlasting, pleasant, happy, holy, pure life, by Him who is the avenue of approach to the Creator-the right hand man of the eternal and incomprehensible, unseen being, familiarly called God .- Jesus Christ, our resurrected broth- er, who clothed himself as it were with our nature by the supreme power of God out of the ordinary course of procreation. This is what the good man Paul, who was a cotemporary of Jesus, described as God manifest in the flesh, that an example of the highest manly purity should be constantly presented to us in the history of his life, sealing his title to being our

AND ADVERTISING GAZETTERR.

Representative and Head, our Deliverer, Seviour, Captain, and Chief, and, Mr Farwell, one word for all, In Him we only fall asleep to awake up to the enjoyment of purer delights in the Better Land, Who can . comprehend it ? Who dares to doubt it ? "This is Eternal Life ! To know the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom He hath sent." This is a very cheerful and pleasing belief. Hope Mr. Farwell, the evil intelligence, whose power is so much seen every where, may not close our hearts in absurd infidelity. People may call these ideas the forceable results of specific education, and so they are admitted to be, but happy are those who are favored with the education of the light in the Soul that comes from the Source of light and benificence. But the resurrection is taught by the seasons! Except a berry of corn or wheat fall into the ground and die, it does not germinate its new life, but who ever sup -. posed that a man was a grain of wheat or a mushroom-without a soul-an eternal etherial intelligence ? Such belief would be very stupid indeed ! Who can cheerfully believe in annihilation ? Away with every " Tomfoolery" about religion, Mr. Farwell, but accept the simple faith of Jesus. GARIBALDI cannot injure it, and Paganism is beyond its pele .-- " GREAT IS THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS !"-Refer to Index.

The Rolling Mills.

What are they ? Shall we confess the public ignorance ? Are they Political grinding machines ? No, Reader ! They are Mills at which all kinds of Bar and Rod Iron are man- ufactured for blacksmiths, engine builders &e, and they also make T Rails for Railway Tracks. The Wyandotte Mills, situated at Wyandotte a few miles below Detroit, are owned by a com- pany of Detroit Stockholders, and the office whose affairs are conducted by Wx. H. ZABRIS- KIE Esq., is located at the Store of the Company, foot of Woodward avenue, in the same office with CAPTAIN E. B. WARD, who stands deservedly in the front rank of the prosperous pioneers and founders of the State of Michigan. Another similar mill is located at Chicago, in which Detroit Capital is also largely represented, and these mills are capable with proper Federal protection to discharge all the Railroad and Iron-monging wants of this whole Wes- tern Region including an area of several States. We can be pardoned for importing Iron wares from Pennsylvania, with our own iron mountains & mines undeveloped, what is it but the most rediculous folly to keep on sending our Capital which is the life blood of every local in- dustry over the Ocean, 3 or 4000 miles, for an article inferior in every respect to our Lake Superior Iron, which is also manufactured into extensive blooms, and we believe in Merchant Iron, also by the Lake Superior Iron Company, the office of which is on the dock, foot of Woodward avenue, at the office of DOCTOR RUSSELL, and its affairs managed by ALLEN A. RABINEAU, Esq., who is Secretary and Teasurer to the Stockholders. We enter a protest against our money, which is so badly needed for the pay of our Mechanics being sent out of our Country for either Pig or Wrought Iron. We vote for an Independent State Sovereignty against all the World. OUR MONEY AT HOME, AND EVERY DIME IN CIRCULATION !

Agricultural Implements, Warehouse.

Our never failing friend, W. S. PENFIELD-card page 81. Still conducts the agency of this old Established House .- Refer to his Advertisement in Index.

Land and Lot Agencies.

It is absurd for men to expect knowledge to creep into their craniums without "search ing for it as for hidden treasures." Therefore to expect that the valuable information con- tained in the advertising department of the Directory shall be known to every body by mere mtuition, is so . foolish that we warn our readers to keep a sharp look out. We therefore refer the reader to the card of Doctor J. L. Whiting on page 81, and to the Advertisers' In- dex, where all the Agents and Dealers in Lots and Lands will be found conspicuously displayed. We ourself give away, and sell the most delightful lands in Emmett County, Iowa, forty acres of delightfully wooded, lawn and meadow lands in this County are offered freely for anybodys acceptance, and more, their Houses and Lots in Detroit, or in any of the Cities and Villages of Michigan, will be bought at fair prices and one third cash paid down, to enable them to move independently upon ESTATEs of their own, where with a few years diligence the possessors and their families will be for life independent and comfortable. The Proprie- tors are anxious to settle the County of Emmett, and every kind of encouragement will be given to settlers. When a few families get ready to go they had better call on James Dale Johnston, 142 Cherry Street, Agent, who will arrange every matter for them satisfactorily.

The Plumbers.

Please refer to THE INDEX ! We know of a tuan who caught a Lizzard in his water pipe. We ourself have had an extensive experience in Hydrostatics.

Dining Saloons.

860 ADVERTISERS' INDEX. . The places advertised are very accommodating to get a Dinner or Lunch for the wayfaring man. People who will not buy a Directory go to Carsons for information.

The Breweries. .

We have partaken of a great many things in our short life time, but never dined, as we know, on Chinese harrier, or rat soup, and we have every where in the world we have lived, been permitted to drink almost anything we.pleased under the government of right, reason, and good common sense, on old fashioned Temperance principles, but it has been reserved for us to experience the arbitrary, and as appears to us very inconsistent dietary prescribed by the Michigan Legislature of 1860-61, which solemnly enacted a Law that whenever our physician instructed us to take some Beer or Ale as a Stomachic Tonic, we must call for and swallow off FIVE GALLONS of this kind of stuff at a time. Strictly conservative of moral and law abiding habits, we recently had occasion to take a goblet of ale at one of our well conducted Taverns, and having called for our five gallons, took one cup and requested the House Keeper to put by the balance for our future use. It put us in remembrance of the truism of the great Dan O'Connell, who had got the peculiar faculty of setting at fault the British Law Makers, when he used to boast to the finest peasantry in the world, that, "The English Parliament never made a Law that he could not drive a coach and six through." Bet before the people the " friction" theories of " good and evil," and leave the rest to the good and the evil influencing powers, and to the constituted police. The faces of mon in daily intercourse with each other, show how they live if there were no other index to their habits ; and the intemperate and vicious are invariably chastised by their own unrestrained indulgences. But he is not wisely informed in his code of family dietary who will not order a barrel of Ale to his cellar for family use. The Brewers who make good healthful present use and Stock Ales will be found under the head of " Brewers," in the ADVERTISERS' INDEX, which see.

Freights and Forwarding.

We are at present impressed with the idea that John Hutchings & Co., foot of Griswold Street, on the Dock. have the facilities of transporting all mankind, their wives and children, and any quantity of Seceding States to the Iron, Copper, Gold, and Silver diggings of Lake Superior, and back again, if they so desire, as the several Lines of Propellers and Steamers they manage the business of, run in both directions. The advertisement of the company tella much more than we can afford to re-print, being ourself in a condition of transitu, and being at the end of a page we have only space to say-Refer to page 84.

Butchers.

We have a pointed prejudice to deal with any Butcher who offers lean meats in the Market. The dream of Pharaohs Lean Cows is ever present to our minds. If an inferior Butcher were to pay us double for an advertisement we could not think of accepting his offer. Everybody in the Street pulls us by the button to know, "how we look so well ?" and we refer him forthwith to "our Butchers and Victualers" in the Directory. Our face is not the only index to the best Meat Markets. A very correct guide is to be found in the ADVERTISERS' INDEX.

The Hatters and Fur Dealers. .

Please turn to the Advertisers' Index. The style of hat we generally wear is viewed in the same camera, obscura as Horace Greeley's pantaloons !

Portraits, Picture Frames and Artists Generally.

The Gentlemen engaged in these ennobling kinds of business have been mindful of the public convenience, and their cards stand out in bold relievo in the Directory. May their shadows never grow less. They are the embodiment of "The living presentiment."-800 the INDEX.

This Mill, Mr. J. B. Hinchman Proprietor, is adjoining the Detroit and Milwaukie Rail Road Depot .- See page 98.

A Review of the Commerce of Detroit for the Year 1860. Reported to the Board of Trade by RAY HADDOCK, Esq., Secretary.

This is an Annual Review of the Trade, Commerce and Manufacturers of Detroit and incidentally of the State of Michigan and its elaborated aggregations in the extensive field of general industry throughout the State, show plainly, on examination, how assidiously the able Compiler prosecuted his reserches in acquiring the data from which the 47 pages of his pamphlet are produced. The Compiler of such a work deserves the enjoyment of the un- mistakable esteem of the general public of both Detroit and the State of Michigan. Ten thousand copies of this work ought to be sold in the City of Detroit alone. Twenty thous- and throughout the State, and the Common Council, and Board of Trade should take decided interest in the extensive distribution of a Pamphlet of such importance to the many depart- ments of the general Industry of Michigan, which are placed before the public at large in such methodised form of detail and summary as must greatly facilitate every individual whether engaged in private or public pursuits, who take an interest in the progress of the Country.

It is deplorable that our hard working men of the Corps Editorial, like Mr. Haddock are not more substantially rewarded from the Common Bank of Public Gratitude. Days of arduous toil and Nights, " Nights, past the Midnight," have been without doubt spent on this to everybodysuseful compendium of our State Resources.

SHELDON, SMITH & SON.

These able architects have succeeded to obtain the general approbation for styles of architecture employed in several new and beautiful blocks of business and public buildinga during the past season. THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN.

L. F. HARTER & CO.

These T gentlemen have moved to 154 Woodward avenue-short distance on the right hand side above the Campus Martius. They will not be long at 154 until the connoiseurs in the art of tea making will be attracted by their olfactories to the place " as smells of good T." A gentleman in disguise once called at this establishment, but not having a long Ro- man rose, absolutely selected an inferior article. and would have no other, because it was cheap. Who ever heard of cheap gold ? The most delicious Teas and Coffees are sold at this house. Griffith is always at his post, expertly ready to wait on nis many friends.

Detroit Marble Mantle Works. G. & A. F. Mehling.

This is a branch of art and manufacture but recently established in Detroit. The pro- cess of giving a real tangible appearance of plain and variagated Marble to Wood, Iron and Stone is successfully demonstrated at these works. Every intelligent citizen ought to make a visit to the establishment which is destined to obtain an extensive patronage .- See p 86.

A. LEHMAN, MERCHANT CLOTHIER, 34 Woodward avenue, near Woodbridge St. We request reference to Advertisers' card on page 91.

Quite an equivalent to Gas Light.

BOOKBINDING, &c.

We call the attention of friends to the card of Friend Palmer, to be found on page 102.

GIN :- A HOUSE WITH A GOOD CHARACTER.

A good character is always worth appreciation, and we discover that the old Quaker House of A M Binninger & Co, as importers and dealers in pure OLD LONDON DOCK GLN, GENUINE COGNAC BRANDY, and OLD KENTUCKY BOURBON, they are properly certified and endorsed by the New York leading newspaper Press. This Importing House is Established since 1778, and must certainly have conducted its business with fairness and respectability, or the name would have perished long ago. We presume many people are literally poisoned by the wretched liquors permitted to be vended, but for medical remedial purposes, such leading houses as this should be protected by Law in its penalties against the manufacturers of villainous liquors. The advertisement of A M Binninger & Co, 19 Broad Street, New York, will be found at page 103.

SEWING MACHINES.

Even although not advertised in the Directory, we yet would be glad to find all the dealers in Sewing Machines selling extensively. Every dwelling should have a Sewing Machine, a Piano and a Washing Machine-and the mothers and daughters of every body's family should be instructed in the use of each of them. The superior good qualities of the Singer Sewing Machines are we understand generally acknowledged. Mr W R Woodruff, agent, at 58 Woodward avenue, will, of course, supply all necessary information on applica- tion .- Refer to Advertisers' Index.
