MERCHANTS SUPPLIED AT EASTERN PRICES

921 Jefferson Avenue, DETROIT.

TO THE LADIES !

An advertisement Free of Charge, but better than a present of a large sum of money to every housekeeper and every young woman intending to own a husband and children :

ADVICE.

3

No young woman should marry unul she knows how to make good bread; and should be ear- ly taught to understand her wifely re- sponsibil- ities in keeping house,

BREAD MAKING.

One of the best bakers gives the following receipt to make superior bread :

"Take three-quarters of a pound of well- boiled mealy potatoes, and mash them through a fine cullender or coarse seive, add about two tablespoonfuls of yeast, and one pint und three- quarters of lukewarm water, together with about three-quarters of a pound of flour, to render the mixture the consistence of thin batter; this mixture should be set aside to ferment ; if placed in a warm situation it will rise in less than two hours, when it will resemble yeast in appearance, except as to color. The sponge so made is then to be mixed with one pint of water, nearly blood warm, and poured into half a peck of flour, which has previously had one ounce and a quarter of salt mixed ta it. The whole should then be kneaded into dough, and allowed to rise in a warm place for ( wo hours, when it should be made into loaves and baked.

" The object of adding the mashed potatoes is to increase the amount of fermentation in the sporige, which it does to a very remarkable degree, and, consequently, renders the bread lighter and better." A few caraway seeds sont- tered in are said to be quite agreeable in the bread.
