The United States Pension Agency for Michigan is located in the Hammond Building, at the corner of Fort and Griswold streets, Detroit. Pensions are paid quarterly on the fourth day of March, June. September and December. Agent, Edward H. Harvey.
U. S. LAND OFFICES IN MICHIGAN.
The Lower Peninsula of Michigan comprises one land district with the office at Grayling. Oscar Palmer of Grayling is register and Henry H. Aplin of Stanton is receiver. The Upper Peninsula is separate district, with the office at Marquette. Register, George A. Royce, of Marquette ; receiver, Thomas D. Mead, of Houghton.

GOVERNMENT OFFICES IN MICHIGAN.
INTERNAL REVENUE TAXES.
Taxes on articles mentioned are as follows:
On beer, $1 per barrel of 31 gallons; distilled spirits, 90 cents per gallon; manu- factured tobacco, 6 cents per pound; manufactured snuff, 6 cents per pound; cigars, $3 per thousand; cigarettes, 50 cents per thousand; smoking opium, $10 per pound; oleomargarine, 2 cents per pound; the circulation of the State banks, 10 per cent.
The following special taxes, or licenses, will also be levied: Rectifiers of less than 500 barrels, $100; rectifiers of 500 barrels or more, $200; dealers retail liquor, $25; dealers wholesale liquor, $100; dealers in malt liquor, wholesale, $50; dealers in malt liquor, retail, $20; retail dealers in oleomargarine, $48; wholesale dealers in oleomargarine, $480; manufacturers of oleomargarine, $600; manufacturers of oleo- margarine, commencing business subsequent to the 30th day of June, in any year, $500; manufacturers of stills, $50, and for each still manufactured, $20, and for each worm manufactured, $20; brewers of less than 500 barrels, $50; brewers of 500 barrels and more, $100.
Manufacturers and peddlers, though not paying taxes, will be required to register once a year at the office of the Collector of Internal Revenue, but dealers in manu- factured tobacco, who have hitherto been obliged to pay a tax of $2.40 a year, are not only relieved of the tax, but are not obliged to register or to have any dealings with the Internal revenue office.
THE CUSTOMS DISTRICTS.
The first Customs district in the State is the district of Michigan. It comprises all the waters and shores of the State lying west of the principal meridian and south of the Straits of Mackinac, except the territory bordering on Green Bay, and includ- ing Bois Blanc Island. Grand Haven is the port of entry, and Cheboygan a port of delivery. Dudley O. Watson is collector.
By a special act passed in June, 1888, Grand Rapids was made a port of entry, of which Rezin A. Maynard is now surveyor.
The second district, the district of Huron, comprises all that portion of the Lower Peninsula which lies east of the principal meridian and north of the south- ern boundary line of Lapeer and St. Clair counties, including all the waters and shores of St. Clair river, Saginaw Bay, and Lake Huron. Port Huron is the port of entry, and Harrison Geer is collector.
The third district, that of Detroit, comprises all the waters and shores of Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie, and the waters connected therewith, from the Miami river to the mouth of the St. Clair river. Detroit is the port of entry. George H. Hop- kins is collector, and Chas. F. Kimball, appraiser.
The fourth district, the district of Superior, comprises the whole Upper Penin- sula of Michigan. Marquette is the port of entry, and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and Ashland, Wisconsin, are sub-ports of entry and delivery. Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie are ports of immediate transportation. Electus B. Howard is collector.

GOVERNMENT OFFICES IN MICHIGAN.
WEATHER BUREAU.
There are eight Weather Bureau offices in Michigan for the observation and report of storms for the benefit of agriculture and commerce. The offices are in charge of an observer, with one or more assistants, and are situated at the follow- ing places:
Alpena, Cheboygan, Detroit, Grand Haven, Manistee, Marquette, Port Huron and Sault de Ste. Marie.
These stations, besides taking the regular observations at 8 A. M. and 8 P. M. (Eastern Standard time), display cold-wave and wind signals.
The following are special display stations and display wind signal only:
Bay City, Black River, Charlevoix, Detour, East Tawas, Escanaba, Frankfort, Glen Haven, Harbor Springs, Ludington, Mackinaw City, Menominee, Muskegon, Oscoda, Rogers City, St. Joseph, Sand Beach, South Haven, Two Harbors, White Fish Point.
MICHIGAN WEATHER SERVICE.
This service, co-operating with the U. S. Signal Service, was established February 3, 1887, for the purpose of collecting and publishing the meteorological features of Michigan. The central office is located at Detroit, with voluntary observers, sta- tions in each county of the State. Observations of the different instruments are taken daily and a monthly report furnished to the director at the central office for compilation and publication. Besides which, daily weather forecasts are tele- graphed or telephoned to all important points, and daily weather maps distributed by mail. The reports are published by the Secretary of State with the Monthly Crop Report. The State furnishes the instruments and publishes the reports, and the U. S. Signal Service furnishes all blanks, franked envelopes for transmitting the reports to the central office, and the services of the director and one assistant. The service is conducted under the control of the State Board of Agriculture. The officers are as follows: Director, Edward A. Evans; E. H. Nimmo, assistant director.
