MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, STATE OFFICERS, SUPREME COURT AND LEGISLATURE.
UNITED STATES SENATORS.
JAMES McMILLAN,
Of Detroit, was born in Hamilton, Ont., May 12, 1838. He obtained a common school education, and in 1855 was prepared for college, but came to Detroit, Mich., where he entered upon a business life.
He participated in the establishment of the Michigan car company in 1863. In 1876 he became a member of the Republican State' central committee, and on the death of Zachariah Chandler was made chairman. He also served as chairman in 1886-7, and from 1890 to the present time.
For three years he was president of the Detroit board of park commissioners, and was for four years a member of the Detroit board of estimates. He was a Republican presidential elector in 1884. Or the convening of the Legislature of 1889 he was chosen United States Senator to succeed Thomas W. Palmer. His term will expire March 3, 1895.
FRANCIS B. STOCKBRIDGE,
Of Kalamazoo, was born in the town of Bath, Maine, April 9, 1826. He acquired a common school education and at sixteen years of age began clerking in a wholesale house in Boston. When twenty-one he went to Chicago and engaged, on a small scale, as lumber dealer. This, the foundation of his financial success, was continued by investments in Michigan pineries. In addition to his extensive interest in Michi- gan lumbering companies and mining companies he is engaged in silver mining in the west and with ten others owns 100,000 acres of pine in Mississippi; also he owns a third interest in the Fort Bragg redwood lumber company, of Fort Bragg, California. At his home in Kalamazoo he is president of the Kalamazoo spring and axle company, and with Mr. S. A. Brown is engaged in fine horse breeding at the Kalamazoo stock farm. In politics he is a Republican of Whig extraction and received the title of "Colonel" from his position on Gov. Blair's staff. He was a member of the House of the Michigan Legislature in 1869-70, and of the Senate of 1871-2. January 19, 1887, he was elected United States Senator for the term of six years from March 4, 1887. January 17, 1893, he was re-elected to that position. His term will expire March 3, 1899.

FIRST DISTRICT.
DETROIT CITY, except 12th, 14th and 16th wards.
JOHN LOGAN CHIPMAN
Was born in Detroit, Mich., June 5, 1830. He acquired his education at the schools of Detroit and the University of Michigan. In 1846 he was engaged in the Lake Superior region as mining explorer; in 1854 he was admitted to the Bar; in 1856 he was elected city attorney of Detroit, and held that position until 1861. He was a member of the House of the State Legislature of 1865, and that year was appointed Attorney of the police board of Detroit. In 1866 he was a candidate to Congress on the Democratic ticket, but was defeated. He retained the office of Police Attorney until May 1, 1879, when he was elected Judge of the Superior Court of Detroit. He was elected on the Democratic ticket a member of the 50th, 51st and 52d Congress of the United States, and re-elected to the 53d by a vote of 20,239 to 17,533 for Frank J. Hecker, Republican. Edward S. Grece, Populist, received 616 votes, and Frank W. Tomlinson, Prohibitionist, received 272 votes.
SECOND DISTRICT.
COUNTIES .- Lenawee. Washtenaw and Monroe; and the townships of Plymouth, Canton, Van Buren, Romulus, Sumpter, Huron, Brownstown, Monguagon, Tay- lor and Ecorse, of Wayne county; also Wyandotte city, Wayne county.
JAMES S. GORMAN, -
Of Chelsea, was born in Lyndon township, Washtenaw county, Mich., Dec. 28, 1850, and was raised on the farm which he now owns and occupies; when eighteen years of age he had his left arm cut off in a threshing machine; his primary education was obtained in the district school, which was continued by a, six years' course at Chelsea union school, except two winters which were occupied in teaching. He then entered the law department of the University of Michigan, from which he graduated in 1876. He went to Jackson city, practiced his profession until 1879, when he moved to Dexter, soon to return to the farm at the request of his aged parents, where he has since made his home. While at Jackson he was for two years assistant prosecuting attorney, and his law practice was with James A. Parkinson of that city. In politics he is a Democrat; was a member of the House of the State Legislature of 1881-2, and of the Senate of 1887-8. He was a member of the 52d Congress of the United States, and re-elected to that of the 53d by a vote of 22,007 to 21,443 for James O'Donnell, Republican. Robert C. Safford, the Prohibition candidate, received 2,280 votes, and George A. Peters, Populist, received 1,061 votes.

JULIUS C. BURROWS,
Of Kalamazoo, was born at North East, Erie county, Pennsylvania, January 9, 1837. He acquired a common school and academical education; when seventeen years of age be taught school and read law. He came to Michigan in 1859; taught school a year; moved to Kalamazoo; began the practice of law. From 1862-64 was captain in the 17th Michigan Infantry in the Union Army. Was prosecuting attorney of Kalamazoo county from 1867-70 inclusively. He was a member of the 43d, 46th, 47th, 49th, 50th, 51st and 52d Congress. He has always been a strong advocate of the principles of the Republican party, and very active on the stump. He was elected to the 53d Congress from the new third district, over Daniel Strange, Dem- ocrat by a vote of 21,287 to 15,802; Leroy E. Lockwood, Populist, received 2,898 votes, and Paul T. Butler, Prohibitionist, received 2,510 votes.

HENRY F. THOMAS
Was born in Jackson Co., Mich., Dec. 17, 1843; he was in Albion College from 1859 until the outbreak of the civil war when he enlisted in Co. D., 7th Michigan cavalry as private, promoted 1st sergeant and 2d lieutenant. He participated in the battle of Gettysburg, and accompanied Gen. Kilpatrick in his raid on Richmond; served under Sheridan in his raid on Lee's rear at the Wilderness; was with Sheridan dur- ing his Shenandoah valley campaign, and took part at the seige of Petersburg. At the close of the war he accompanied his regiment to the west, and served in the Indian campaign during the summer of 1865 in Colorado and Dakota territories. He returned to Michigan, took a course at the University, graduating in 1868; later he received the degree of M. A. at Albion College. He is located in the city of Allegan, engaged in the practice of medicine. In politics he is a Republican. Was a member of the House of the State Legislature of 1873-4 and of the Senate of 1875-6. He was elected to the 53d Congress of the United States over George L. Yaple, the Democrat and People's party candidate, by a vote of 21,352 to 20,246. John B. Sweetland. Prohibitionist, received 1,931 votes.

CHARLES E. BELKNAP,
Of Grand Rapids, was born in Massena, St. Lawrence county, N. Y., October 17, 1846. He has resided in Michigan since 1855. August 14, 1862, he enlisted as private in the 21st Michigan Infantry, was promoted to corporal, sergeant and sergeant general.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES.
In the spring of 1863 he was promoted to 2d lieutenant, and after the battle of Chickamauga, by order of Gen. Sherman, was promoted to 1st lieutenant. Jan. 8, 1864, he was made captain; when but 17 years 3 months old, he had been wounded seven times. He was mustered out June 22, 1865, and returned to Grand Rapids and engaged in the manufacture of wagons and carriages. He has held several local offices of trust and honor. Was mayor of the city of Grand Rapids in 1884. He was a member of the 52d Congress, elected on the Republican ticket to fill vacancy caused by the death of Melbourne H. Ford; elected Nov. 3, 1891. at special election. Mr. Belknap, Republican candidate to the 53d Congress was opposed by Geo. F. Richardson, Democrat and People's party candidate. The face of the returns showed Mr. Rich- ardson in the majority, and in accordance therewith a certificate of election was issued him. Certain votes not being counted in Ionia county the Supreme Court issued mandamus to show cause, and on failure so to do, a recount was ordered which gave a total vote as follows: George F. Richardson, 20,120; Charles E. Belknap, 20,139. In accordance therewith a certificate of election was granted Mr. Belknap. Lemuel Clute, Prohibitionist, received 1,873 votes.
GEORGE F. RICHARDSON
Was born in Jamestown, Ottawa county, Michigan, July 1, 1850. He is the son of a pioneer farmer, and his life's occupation has been that of a farmer. His early education was acquired at the district school and confined mostly to winter terms. At the age of twenty-four years he was married to Miss Flora E. Sage, of Grand Rapids, shortly afterwards opening a general store at Jamestown, which he man- aged in connection with his farm until 1883. He has held the office of township clerk eight years; was a member of the House in the State Legislature of 1885-6 and of 1891-2; each; time elected on the fusion ticket.

COUNTIES .- Genesee, Ingham, Livingston and Oakland; townships of Livonia, Nankin, Dearborn, Redford, Springwells and Greenfield, in Wayne county, and 12th, 14th and 16th wards of Detroit city.
DAVID D. AITKEN,
Of Flint, was born in the township of Flint, Genesee county, Mich., September 5, 1854. His early life was spent on the farm, attending district school winters; he attended high school at Flint, taught one term, went to New Jersey where he kept books a portion of the time and followed the life of a drummer; he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1878 and has since been in active practice at Flint. He was never a candidate for office before. In politics he is a Republican and was elected to the 53d Congress of the United States by a vote of 21,046 to 19,669 for Byron G. Stout, Democrat; A. E. Cole, Populist, received 2,290 votes, and Byron Davendorf, Prohibitionist, received 2,248 votes.

JUSTIN R. WHITING,
Of St. Clair, was born in Bath, Steuben county, N. Y., Feb. 18, 1817. When two years of age he came with his parents to Michigan, locating at St. Clair, where he has since made his home. He attended the St. Clair schools, and at sixteen years of age entered the University of Michigan. After two years he left school, returned to St. Clair. and has since been engaged in the mercantile business. In politics he was a Republican until 1876, when he joined the Greenback party, since which time he has been a Populist-Democrat. In 1879 he was elected mayor of his city; was a member of the State Senate of 1883-84. He was a member of the 52d Congress, elected on the fusion ticket; re-elected to the 53d Congress on the Democrat ticket by a vote of 16,125 to 15,602 for Philip L. Wixson, Republican; Alfred Pagett, Pop- ulist, received 1,737 votes (711 of which were Alfred R. Pagett); Aaron G. West- brook. Prohibitionist, received 1,267 votes.

WILLIAM SEELYE LINTON,
Congressman from the Eighth District, was born in St. Clair, Mich., February 4, 1856. When four years of age, he removed with his parents to Saginaw, Mich., where he acquired his early education in the public schools. At the age of 15 years (1871) he began clerking in a general store at Farwell, Mich., and soon afterwards became manager of his father's sawmill and lumber yard at the same place. He was for a time member of a firm dealing in lumber at Jonesville, Mich., and after- wards engaged as bookkeeper with prominent lumbermen in Saginaw. When 21 years of age he became superintendent of a large lumber industry at Wells, Bay county (now Alger, Arenac county), Mich. Was at this time for two terms member of board of supervisors. In 1878 he was married to Miss Ida M. Lowry of Saginaw, and the next year moved to Saginaw where he has since made his home. He is engaged in the lumber and salt business. He was for three years president of the Saginaw Building and Loan Association, and in 1891 was president of State League of Building and Loan Associations. In 1890-91 was Great Commander Knights of Maccabees. He is vice president and treasurer of the Linton Mfg. Co. and pres- ident of the Allen Nursery Company of Rochester, N. Y. In politics he is a Repub- lican ; has held the office of mayor of East Saginaw two terms, was member of the House of Representatives of the State Legislature in 1887-8, is at present mayor of consolidated Saginaw and was Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor in 1890. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives for the term of 1893-4, by a vote of 17,411 to 15,886 for Henry F. Youmans, Democrat and Populist; 1,125 for A. F. Cooley, Prohibitionist, and 977 for Daniel Thompson, Independent Populist.
