Ry. For the accommoda- tion of these roads,"a Union Depot, at a cost of $140,000, has been construct- ed. Atchison is also one of the chief manufacturing cities


of Kansas. Amongst its industries are car shops, foundries, furniture, an artificial ice plant, woodenware, and one of the principal branches of Baker-Vawter Co., innfrs of Loose Leaf Ledgers and Account Books of every description, harness, broom, carriage, cigar, over- alls, planing mills and pressed brick yards. Extensive coal mining opera- tions are being developed here by lo- cal capital, and with home coal it will attract other manufacturing interests at this point. The grain trade done here is immense, and the lumber trade is also extensive. There are four ele- vators, with an average capacity of 200,000 bushels, roller flouring mills capable of grinding 4,000 bushels of wheat per day; also wholesale drug. grocery and hardware firms are lo- cated here. There are 2 National banks and 1 State savings bank. There is 1 daily evening paper -- Atchison Globe. The Champion, weekly, is the oldest paper in the state. There are 6 hotels, The Byram being one of the best in the west, and is the recogniezd com- mercial headquarters. Twelve church editices, representing the principal re- ligious denominations, many of them. being large and handsome structures. The educational facilities are of a su- perior order, and the city is becoming notably prominent for the liberal and . careful manner in which such matters are supported and maintained, there being 10 public school buildings. These buildings are well constructed and fur- nish accommodation of upwards of 3,000 pupils. In addition to these pub- lic schools there are 2 private acade- inies, Mt. Scholastica and the Atchison Institute, and 3 colleges, the St. Bene-


diet and the St. Louis (Catholic) and the Midland University Lutheran). There is a large public Hbrary contain. ing several thousand volumes. The city has a full representation of the secret and benevolent societies, a com- plete and effective system of water works, a paid fire department, street railways, opera house, 2 telephone ex- changes, are and incandescent systems of electric lighting and gas works; a handsome iron bridge, on stone piers and nearly 1,200 feet in length, spans the Missouri river at this point and connects the city with East Atchison.
