HUTCHINSON. Population, 10,675. First settled in 1872. The county seat of Reno county, the center of the Kan- sas wheat belt, is located on the A .. T. & S. Fe, the MM. P .. the C., R. I. & P. and the H. & S. Rys., and on the Arkansas river, 168 miles s. w. of To- peka, 21S s. w. of Atchison and 234 s. w. of Kansas City. It is supported by a rich agricultural section and is one of the leading fruit counties of the state, containing 550,500 fruit trees. The live stock industry is also very large. The city is underlaid with a vein of pure rock salt, 300 feet thick and found at a depth of 375 feet. It is reached by bored wells, and fresh water is forced through pipes to the bed of salt, causing it to dissolve, and is pumped up as brine into evaporat. ing pans. This industry gives employ- ment to 1,000 men, and the production of salt averages 5,000 barrels per day. There are churches of the leading ro ligious denominations, 7 public school buildings, a street railway, an excel- lent system of water works, a well-
equipped fire department, electric lights, gas works, 3 banks and 2 daily and 5 weekly newspapers. The manu- facture of salt is the chief industry. in addition to which there are 2 plan- ing mills, 2 ice factories and cold stor age plants. 3 flouring mills, office and furniture factory, packing houses. foundries and machine shops, cream ery, boiler works, numerous jobbing houses, 2 first-class hotels, a Carnegie
public library, a $50,000 court house. A government building is to be erect ed here this year to cost $30,000. This city is widely known as a convention" city, and more public gatherings take place here than at any other point lu the state. This is an exceedingly fa. vorable location for manufactories. Principal shipments are salt, grain. live stock, butter, eggs, poultry, flour and produce. Telephone and telegraph facilities. Exp., Pacific, U. S. and W .. F. & Co. John B. Vincent, P. M.
