ABILENE. Population, 4,500. The county seat of Dickinson county, is located on the A., T. & S. Fe, the U. P. and the C., R. I & P. Rys. and on the Smoky Hill river, 23 miles e. of Salina and 163 w. of Kansas City. It dates its settlement from 1867, was incor- porated as a city in 1869, and being in the center of a rich agricultural sec- tion is an excellent market for grain and live stock, of which large quan- tities are shipped. The city is lighted by electricity, has the Holly system of water works, a water supply that is not equaled for purity in the United States, a fire department and telephone exchanges. There are churches of the leading religious denominations, excel- lent educational facilities, a public li- brary, an opera house with a seating capacity of 700, first-class hotels, 3 banks, with a combined capital and surplus of $150,000, and with deposits
