KANSAS CITY, KANSAS. Popula- tion 51,418. Lies on the Mistouri river in the shape of a crescent, at its con- fluence with the Kansas river, at an elevation of 250 feet above the ocean Nature appears to have designed H for a great commercial center. It is a well established fact that commerce travels in the path of the great water- ways of a country. A chip dropped in the headwaters of either the Kansas or Missouri rivers naturally seeks the territory of this city, and so does the commerce of their great valleys flow within its borders. The development and prosperity of a city are largely de- pendent upon its facilities for tran- sportation, and to its railroads is due more than to any other single agency the present prosperity of Kansas City. These lines are developing some of the richest agricultural. stock-raising and mining regions on the continent. and gathering in Kansas City an im- mense and growing traffic. The rail- roads centering here are the K. C .. N. W. R. R .. the M. P. Ry., the Inter- State Rapid Transit. the Kansas Belt Line. U. P. Ry .. C., K. & N. Ry .. K. C .. Ft. S. & G. R. R .. The Kansas river di- vides the city, and substantial railroad and wagon bridges connect the east and west sides, affording ample facil- ities to accommodate its trade and commerce. It is connected with Kan- sas City, Mo .. by. a double track ele- vated railway. a double track cable railway and a double track electric railway line, which afford ample facil- ities for rapid transit between the two cities. The elevated road, by means of its different branches and feeders. forms a belt line around the city. The west side railroad has four miles of double track running from the s. e. to the n. w. part of the city. The Wyan- dotte & Northwestern. the Missouri Pacific, the Union Pacific. the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, the Chicago. its corporate limits. Its stock yards are the most commodions and best appoint. ed in the Missouri valley, having a cat pacity unlimited for weighing. feed- ing and shipping, together with the best market to be found in the United States. It has the largest beef and pork packing establishments in the world. Kansas City. Kas., is pre-em- inently a manufacturing center, and it is to the fostering of this industry that her present proud position of the fore- most city in the State is due. Her nat- ural facilities as a site for large fac- tories and shops are unequaled, and with the great lines of the continent crossing railway systems centering at this point, it is no matter of amazo- ment that the city is standing where it is to-day. It has a fine system of wa- ter works, with a capacity of 60,000,000 gallons per day, which cost a million dollars. The city has an efficient paid fire department. that stands high in the estimation of the people, and is second to none in the country. In the scramble for the almighty dollar. the people have not been unmindful of their spiritual welfare, and over thirty- five houses of worship are to be found in different parts of the city. with well organized church societies, and not less than $400,000 being invested in church buildings at this time. Its public school system is the pride of its people. It has 100 miles of graded streets, over 60 miles of paved streets, and 180 miles of sidewalks. As it is the only rival Chicago has in the live stock trade. it is ambitious to rival the city on the lakes in the grain trade of the west. and is making rapid strides in that direction. It is growing rapidly in wealth and population, and is the larg- est city in the State, and is destined to become the great commercial center of the Missouri valley. Exp., Am .. Adams .. W ..
