FORT LEAVENWORTH, Named in honor of General Henry Leavenworth who established the site in 1827. is lo. rated 3 miles n. of the city. The res. ervation comprises 6,000 acres and is the most valuable military possession of the government. It is the seat of the general service and staff college. and the United States Penitentiary is also located at this point. To the col loge are annually sent many of the subaltern officers of the army to ob. thin a practical education in the ari of war. Those who prove the most "theient are then sent to the War Col lege at Washington for another course of instruction. The garrison of the post is fixed at 3,000 enlisted men. It con sists of four companies of engineers. three batteries of artillery, four troops of cavalry and twelve companies of infantry. Brigadier General J. Frank. lin Bell, an officer distinguished by bis condue: during the Spanish-American war, is commandant of the post and college. The post is now undergoing many improvements. More than two million dollars have already been ex- pended to meet the requirements of the government, and, when completed it is expected that Fort Leavenworth will be the largest single military es tablishment in the world. At least an- other million dollars will be expended during the next two years to complete 'he improvements. The post is reached hy an electric line from the city bear- ing the same name, cars running every twenty minutes. The former military prison is now the United States Peni- ientiary. in charge of Major W. R. Mc- Claughrey. A new prison is being constructed in the southwestern part of the reserve by convict labor and when completed will cost three million dollars. It will be the model prison of the world. Recently four hundred con viets were transferred to it. sufficient buildings having been completed to wrmit. The prisoners sentenced by the federal courts in Kansas, Colorado Oklahoma and Indian Territoy and Arkansas and Texas are sent to this institution. The average number of convicts confined is 1,000. Telephone and electric cars connection. Teie

FORT RILEY. A 12 company inili- tary post on the U. P. Ry., in Geary county. 3 miles from Junction City, the county seat and banking point.
FORT SCOTT. Population, 15,000: Is the judicial seat of Bourbon county. gud is situated on the Marmaton river and on the M. P., the M., K. & T. an ] the St. L. & S. Fe Rys., 100 miles 6. of Kansas City, Mo., and 130 from To peka. The city is lighted by gas and electricity, has good water works, an electric street railway, churches of all the leading denominations, a high school and 11 grammar and primary school buildings, 3 banks, an opera house with a seating capacity of 800 convention hall with a seating capac. ity of 3,000, 3 daily and 1 semi-weckiy newspapers. Underneath and around the city are found large deposits of cement rock, the finest beds of flag- stone, valuable coal veins, pottery and fire clays, and building rock and com. mon clays are abundant. These raw materials have developed foundries and machine shops, cement, pottery. pressed brick and tile works. several costly hotels, flour mills and grain ele- vators. It is the center of the coal fields of Kansas and Missouri, and re- cent discoveries of rich lead and zine ore indicate that it is in the minera! district which has so prospered the towns 40 and 60 miles north. The city is built in the valley of the Marmaton river, which furnishes ample water power for all purposes. Good drainage and pure drinking water render it ex- ceptionally healthful. the death rate being among the lowest in the state.
The first gas that was discovered in Kansas was here in 1867, which is still flowing and is being used for do- mestic purposes. 2 cement mills. With its great natural resources and rich surrounding country, Fort Scott is destined to become a great manufac- turing and jobbing center. Tel., W. U.
