HOLTON. Population, 3,600. Tlie county seat of Jackson county, is a prosperous incorporated city, located on the C. R. I. & P., the K. C. N. W. and the L. K. & W. Rys., 56 miles northwest of Leavenworth and 30 north of Topeka. This is the seat of Campbell College with a faculty of 18 professors and about 500 pupils, one of the most prominent institutions in the State, pleasantly located and con- veniently connected by rail with all parts of the country. The main build- ing is a magnificent gray stone struc- ture which may be seen for niiles from the surrounding country. The college is under exceptionally able manage- ment, who can justly claim to have brought the university to as high a degree of perfection as any institution in the West, for the acquirement of
the higher grades of education, clas sics and the fine arts. The city has churches of the Baptist, Catholic, Christian, Evangelical, German Pres. byterian, Methodist Episcopal, Presby- terian, African Baptist and African Methodist Episcopal denominations, good schools, 3 banks, an electric light plant, grain elevators, etc. Four week- ly newspapers, the Kansas Sunflower. the Recorder, the Signal and the Tri- bune, are published.
