GRIDY, GREEDY, Or GREEDYE, THOMAS, from Devonshire, England, b. 1586; m. Maria Roberts or Robertsen wid. of John Seals of N. A .; was among the first settlers of Gd in 1646, and allotted a plantation-lot, but publicly whipped and banished in the same year for theft, as per p. 103 of Cal. of His. Dutch Man. He appears, however, afterwards to have been allowed to return and obtain or hold property, which he sold May 26, 1653, to David Provoost, as per town rec. In 1656 he was again banished for 12 years, as per p. . 161 of Cal. of Dutch Man. For a further account of him see p. 99 of the second edition of the Bergen Geneal- ogy. His will is da. Oct. 10, 1658, pro. Nov. 4 of the same year, and rec. on the Gd town rec. In it he makes John. and Peter Tilton his heirs, from which it may be inferred he left no male children. GRIFFIN or GRIFFING, EDWARD, of N. A. and Flh. He appears to have emigrated as a servant of Capt. Clever or Clebers of Va., and was claimed Aug. 27, 1640, by the Gov. of Maryland as a runaway, as per p. 73 of Cal. of Dutch Man .. Feb. 28, 1653, he bought of "Gerrit Bricker " 25 morgens of land in FIh. This land he sold July 28, 1653, to " Bartel Loot and Peter Loot" (Lott), describing it as "on the west side of the road near the Flat bush, next the ministers land Nº 9, as conveyed to the grantor by Gerrit Strycker:" the above "Bricker " should be " Strycker." See pp. 377 and 378 of Cal. of His. Dutch Man. He appears also to have owned land in Gd, selling Apl. 5, 1661, to Richard Stout plantation-lot No. 26 in said town, as per Gd rec. GRIGG or GRIGS Sent, (probably a s. of George Griggs, who emigrated from Lavenden, Newport, in England, to New England about 1635, as per p. 44 of Hotten's Emi- grants), m. Elizabeth Settled in Gd, where he was allotted land as early as 1672. Sold Sept. 13, 1695, to his s. John 8 A. of land on the E. side of Gd, on a neck known as Ambrose Island, as per p. 73 of Lib. 2 of Con. His name appears on the cen. of 1698. Issue :- John Jun'; Daniel; Thomas; Benjamin; and Samuel-most of whom settled in N. J. Made his mark to documents. His s. Daniel signed his name "Daniell Griggs " in 1710. John Jun' of Gd, m. 1ªt Anna dau. of Willem Willemse and Mayke Pieterse Wyckoff; m. 2ª, 1684, Martha dau. of Obadiah Wilkins. Sold Aug. 28, 1697, a plot of 20 A. in Gd to Jochem Gulick for £60, as per p. 194 of Lib. 2 of Con. Was constable of Gd in 1701. A. for an assault com- mitted by said Wentworth upon him on the same day that justice was executed on the three soldiers on the Flatt near the mill (Flatlands), and the tearing his clothes from his body, as per p. 443 of Valentine's Manual of 1851. GROVER, JAMES, (English,) among the first settlers of Gd, per town rec., where he was granted Nov. 12, 1646, a plantation-lot. He with Baxter and Hubbard raised the standard of rebellion in Gd in 1655, proclaiming Cromwell as Lord Protector, but failed in their effort. Mar. 21, 1666-7, he sold to Thomas Delavall plantation-lot No. 6 in Gd, as per town rec., and finally removed to N. J., where in 1669 he was one of the patentees or purchasers of Middle- town, as per p. 73 of Vol. I. of Raum's N. J., and in 1683 appointed a justice of the peace for Middletown. Wouter, from Hilversum in North Holland, and a resi- dent of Br", m. Dec. 14, 1679, Lysbeth Jans Van Goude wid. of Frans Bloodgood of Flushing. Both mem. of the R. D. ch. of Br" in 1679, and entered as removed to Flush- ing. In 1686 a Wouter Guysbertse among the patentees of Newtown. In 1679 he complained to the court of sessions that he was hindered by Foulaer Dirricksen from the use of a highway to the woods and to the village, and desired Justice Betts to view the same and cause a sufficient high- way to be laid out. There was a Wouter Gysbertsen who m. Dorothea Jochems or Kelders, and had several children bp. in N. Y. between 1666 and 1677, and a Wouter Gysberts of Buk who paid a marriage-fee of 6 gl. to Flb ch. in 1666. See Wouter Gysbertse Ver Scheur.
HADDAM, HEDDAM, or HATTUM, DERICK, m. Annetje Tile- man Van der Meyer; d. about 1678. His wid. m. 2ª, Sept. 25, 1679, Hendrick Tyssen Lanen Van Pelt of Gowanus. He owned the farm in Gowanus, since of the Van Pelts, which said Henry Tyssen occupied during the minority of his

HAINELLE, MICHIL, m. Hendrica Strockels, and d. in 1685. He appears to have resided at first in N. A., of the D. ch. of which locality he and his wife were mem., and entered on the ch. rec. in 1665 as removed to Brn. Apl. 3, 1666, he bought of Michael Tadens the patent of Claes Jan- sen Van Naerden of about 21 A., located on the East River in Br", between the patent of Frederick Lubbertse and that of Jan Mange, to which he appears to have removed. His name and that of his wife appear on Do. Van Zuuren's list of D. ch. mem. of 1677, hailing from the Walabocht, of which church he was an elder in 1680. He was clerk of the five Dutch towns from 1674 to '80, and constable of Br" in 1669 and '70. Oct. 18, 1667, his name appears as one of the patentees on Gov. Nichols' patent of Br"; and May 14, 1670, as one of the grantors on the deed purchasing from the Indians their claims to the lands in and about Bedford, as per p. 159 of Vol. I. of Stiles's Br". June 28, 1673, he petitioned to be appointed register of horses exported from L. I. at Bra ferry, as per p. 37 of Cal. of Eng. Man. The Rev. Dr. Strong in his History of Flh erroneously makes him schoolmaster of said town. HALL, THOMAS, (English.) Was in the employ of George Holmes in 1637, when he with 12 or 13 persons from Con- necticut made an effort to form a settlement on the Dela- ware, but failing, were taken prisoners by the Dutch and carried to New Amsterdam on the "Manhattans," where most of them settled .* There were several Thomas Halls, who emigrated to Va. at an early date. Nov. 17, 1641, Thomas Hall of Gloucester, England, m. Anne Mitfort of Bristol, wid. of Wm Cuyck of N. A., where he resided, and who was probably this Thomas. In 1643 he was one of the eight men representing the people who memorialized the States-General on the subject of their defenceless and forlorn condition. On Lady Mody attempting to form a settlement in Gd in 1643, he followed her there. Jan. 5, 1655, he bought a parcel of land in said town of Richard Cloughs, as per town rec. In 1664 he took the oath of allegiance to the English in N. Y. Signed his name " Thomas Hall."

He m. Apl. 20, 1657, in N. A., Elsje Reuvenkomp from Marken in North Holland.

Adriaen, the common ancestor. of the family, emigrated about 1650 or '51 from Amsterdam; m. Catharine -; d. Apl. 1672. About 1653 he resided in N. A., and Apl. 25, 1661, he obtained a patent for 50 morgens, with plain and meadow land in addition, in Flh, to which he removed. This patent is entered Feb. 2, 1670, on p. 2 of Lib. A of Flh rec. as.a double lot on the E. side of the road, to the N. of land of Willem Jacobse (Van Boerum), and to the S. of that of Jan Seubringh, stretching W., a little southerly; broad 50 rods and I ft .; in length 600 rods; containing 50 mor- gens and 60 rods: 2 pieces of salt meadows, the one No. 12, broad 8 rods, containing 2 morgens; the other No. 4, broad 12 rods, cong. 3 morgens, stretching from the woods south- erly to the sea: and 2 pieces of plain land, Nos. 24 and 25, broad taken together 48 rods 4 ft., stretching southerly from the road to the woods, cong. 5 morgens. Of this patent his heirs, Aug. 26, 1693, after his death conveyed, as per p. 200 of Lib. A of Flh rec. (on which page the patent is entered) a piece of 37} rods broad and 600 rods in length, cong. 37} morgens, to his s. Abraham. He also appears to have obtained a patent for another plantation of 24 morgens in Flh. He was a mag. of Flh in 1654, '55, '56, '57, '58, '60, and '63; schout fiscaal of the five Dutch towns in 1661; secretary of Flh and Flds, 1659 to 1661; of Flh, Flds, Br", and N. U., 1662 to 1665; secretary of Flb in 1671; and auc- tioneer. Apl. 29, 1688, Catharine his wid. joined the R. D. ch. of N. Y., to which place she appears to have removed. Issue :- Joseph; Hendricus; Jacobus, bp. Mar. 9, 1653, in N. A .; Abraham; Denyse; Isaac; Benjamin; Elizabeth, who m. Apl. 12, 1684, Tobias Ten Eyck; and John. Signed his name "Adriaen Hegeman."
