m. Sept. 23, 1748, Isaac Denyse. Signed his name "Elias. Hubbard Juner.'

James, the common ancestor of the Kings Co. and N. J. Hubbards, emigrated from Langham in the county of Rut- land, England. Came to Gd with Lady Mody and others, who left New England to enjoy their peculiar religious views, where they settled about 1643; m. Ist Martha -; m. 2ª, Dec. 31, 1664, Elizabeth Bailies or Baylis. Mag. of Gd in 1645, '51, '53, '63, and '64; and schout fiscaal of Gd in 1650. On Gov. Kieft's patent of Gd of 1645, having a plantation-lot granted in 1646. With Baxter and Grover rebelled, in 1655, against the Dutch authorities, who had sheltered and pro- tected them, for which he was imprisoned. Was a representa- tive of Gd in the Hempstead convention of 1665. Had a tract of 176 A. surveyed for him at the head of the Fresh Kil on S. I., as per p. 206 of Vol. I. of Land Papers. Issue :- James, b. Dec. 10, 1665; Rebecca, b. Apl. 28, 1667; Eliza- beth, b. June 3, 1669; John, b. Mar. 20, 1670; Elias, b. Apl. II, 1673; (sup.) Hannah, who m. Myndert Johnson; and Samuel, b. May 3, 1676. Signed his name "J' Hubbard."

The following curious entry is copied from Lib. 3 of Gd rec .: "The record of mee James Hubbard: To Certifie mine or any other of his brethren William: John: Henry & Margret wth him selve ye youngest of leaven sonns & Dafters: yet butt five known of here, of our father Henry Hubbard & our mother Margrett: of ye Towne of Langham: in ye Countye of Ruttland yeaman: stands upon ye record of ye regester To be ye 123: Generation: As I have receved by letters in ye yeare 1669: & my Chilldren wth ye Rest of my Bretherens chilldren are ye 124: Generation: weh I James Hubbard of Gravesend on ye wester end of long Ile land desired To have Recorded on ye Townes Regester of Gravesend: for his Children To add & to have Respect unto: for there better knowledge of There Relations in ye parts of Urope ye land of England in Cass of There Travells To Those parts."

Allowing 30 years for a generation, this would carry the genealogy of the family back over 4000 years, or to about the time of Noah's flood. If there is any foundation for the 123 generations, the inference would be that the ancestors of the Hubbard's were Jews, for they alone through the Bible trace from Noah to the days of our Saviour, and are the only race who could be supposed to make a pretence of tracing from that period to the present time. There was a James Hubbard, ag. 27, who emigrated from London to St Christopher's in 1635, as per p. 80 of Hotten's Emigrants.

James (s. of James), b. Dec. 10, 1665; m. Rachel -----; d.

end of L. I., lying within the present bounds of N. U. and Gd, to which he removed, and for which the patent was dated May 27, 1643. Feb. 9, 1660, he sold his patent to Nicholas Stillwell for 1600 gl. and the fee of plantation-lot No. 29 in Gd, with the buildings and improvements thereon, which plantation-lot Anthony sold Dec. 1669 to Fernandus Van Sickelen, his son-in-law. After this he appears to have removed back to N. A., where he died. Anthony's patent during this period was known as "Turk's plantation," from his being designated as " Turk" on some of the old records. Stillwell sold said patent Feb. 28, 1664, to Francois de Bruynne, after whom it was called Bruynnsberg. June 4, 1665, De Bruynne sold a part of the patent located on the main road from the village of N. U. to Gd, and on the old Bath road or lane, to Jan Janse Ver Ryne. Dec. 10, 1678, he sold the remainder, through Anna his wife as his attor- ney, to Barent Joosten and Jan Hansen (Van Noortstrand). June 1, 1696, Jan Hansen of N. U. sold to Barent Joosten his one half of "Turk's plantation," containing 100 A., as. per p. 98 of Lib. 2 of Con., and on the same date Joosten and Hansen conveyed the one half of said plantation to Gerret Coerten (Voorhies), as per p. 99 of said Lib. 2. Oct. 9, 1699, Gerret Coerten of N. U., as per p. 203 of said Lib., sold to Albert Coerten his s. one half of said plantation, and Feb. 12, 1702-3, Barent Joosten of N. U. sold to said Albert Coer- ten his one half of the same, as per p. 261 of said Lib. 2, thus making Albert the sole owner of the whole of the patent, except the part sold to Ver Ryne. May 9, 1747, Albert Coerten conveyed to his son Coert Voorhies, and Oct. 5, 1756, Coert conveyed to his sons Coert and Barnardus said premises. In 1879, in levelling the sand-dunes on the up- land on the edge of the bay a little S.E. of the buildings of Mr. Gunther at Locust Grove, which dunes had been blown up from the beach, and which had been gradually extending back with the abrasion of the shore or coast, the remains of two separate pieces of stone wall about 2 ft. high and I ft. wide, made mainly of unbroken field-stones laid in clay mortar, with a clay floor between them, were exhumed. These remains were covered with from 4 to 10 ft. of sand, and are probably those of the barn or other farm buildings of Anthony Jansen, it being customary in the early settle- ment of this country to construct their threshing-floors of clay, of which specimens existed and were in use in this country in the younger days of the author, their roofs being made of thatched straw instead of shingles, as at present.
