Vos or VOSCH, BALTHAZER Jun', sometimes written Jonck- er de Vosch (young de Vosch), emigrated from Utrecht in 1662; bought in July of that year 2 farms in Flh, as per pp. 103 and 105 of Lib. B of Flh rec .; and settled in N. U., of which town he was a mag. in 1663, '64, and '65. In 1665 he and Jacques Cortelyou represented N. U. in what is com- monly known as the Duke's Convention or Assembly of the Colony, which met at Hempstead, and in which was enacted what is known as the Duke's laws. Singularly by Thomp- son and nearly all of our historians, he is designated as "Younger Hope," the "Younger" being probably derived from "Joncker," which means young mister or junior, but how "Vosch" or "de Vosch" became transformed into " Hope" is not so easily explained, especially when the English of the Dutch word "Vos" is "Fox." Jan. 16, 1665, he bought of Claes Claesen (Smit) a plantation in N. U., be- tween that of Jacob Swart and that of Albert Albertse (Ter- hune). He removed from N. U. to Flds, where he resided Dec. 6, 1669, at which date he bought of Ferdinandus Van Sicke- len a parcel of land with the improvements in Gd, as per Gd rec. From Flds he appears to have returned to the Nether- lands in embarrassed circumstances, a farm which he
