HOLMES, HOMS, or HULMES, GEORGE, (English,) bought Mar. 14, 1649, the lot of Ambrose London in Gd of Wm Golder, as per Gd rec. There was a Joris Holmes in N. A. who had several children bp. in the R. D. ch. of that place, and who was inspector of tobacco in 1653. Made his mark to documents. A George Holmes (probably the above George) with 12 or 13 persons, besides his hired man Thomas Hall, all English from Connecticut, undertook in 1635 to make a settlement in the Dutch territory on the Delaware, making an attack on Fort Nassau which failed, they being made prisoners by the Dutch and carried to Manhattan, as per p. 40 of Hazard's Annals of Pa. (see also p. 127 of Vol. IV. of the Genealogical Record), where most of them remained and settled. He probably with other English settlers at N. A. followed Lady Mody to Gd. There was a Joris Homs of N. Y. who m. Aug. 22, 1695, in N. Y., Anneken Kaljiers of N. Albany, both residents of Buk at date of marriage.

Served as a juror in the court of sessions of Kings Co. in 1695; and sold Feb. 7, 1695-6, with consent of his mother Ales or Alse and of his w. Anna, to his uncle Nicho- las Stillwell of Gd his lands in said town, as per p. 86 of Lib. 2 of Con. Bought in 1704 a farm near the village of Middletown, N. J., to which he removed. Issue (as per Rev. G. C. Schenck) :- Elias, b. 1704, m. Mar. 1730 Ariaentje Aersen; Patience, b. Sept. 28, 1712; Sarah, b. Mar. 27, 1715, m. Johannes Tyse; Wilhelmus, b. Aug. 24, 1718; Joseph, b. May 3, 1665, he bought of John Ruckman plantation-lot No. 22 in Gd; owned 1} lots on Gisbert's I. in 1670, as per Gd rec .; lieut. of militia in 1673, and a mag. in 1674. His will is da. Apl. 28, 1679; presented to the court of sessions in 1679 for proof; and rec. on p. 351 of Lib. I of N. Y. surr. off. His children settled in Monmouth Co., N. J., where they have numerous descendants. Issue :- Samuel, b. Feb. 12, 1668; Ann, b. Dec. 30, 1670, m. May 22, 1691, Gedaen Jacobus Kierste of N. Y .; Joseph, b. Mar. 17, 1672; Catharine, b. U. in 1737. His father emi- grated from Haerlem, settled in N. A., where he m. June 23, 1661, Catharine Cregiers of Amsterdam; d. about 1684 or '86 (his will being dated Mar. 12, 1676, and rec. on p. 83 of Lib. 3 in off. of surr. of N. Y.), having children, Dirk, Lysbeth, Marten, Christopher, Francis, Jacob, Deynoot, and Harmen. Christopher and Neeltje had issue :- Christo- pher of Millstone, N. J., bp. Jan. 14, 1728; Harmanus, bp. May 29, 1732; Sara, bp. Dec. 8, 1734; Adriaentje, bp. Sept. 19, 1736; Harman, bp. Sept. 29, 1739; John of Millstone; and Martinus. Signed his name "Christoffel Hoogland."
Cornelis Dircksen, b. 1599. Kept goats for their milk in 1638 for Wouter Van Twiller, as per p. 2 of Cal. of Dutch His. Man. Sold cows to Tunis Nyssen (Denyse) in 1643, as per p. 25 of do. Was ferry-master at Bra in 1652, when he sold a lot with house and barn, on the shore of L. I. near the ferry, to Cornelis de Potter, as per p. 55 of do. Dec. 12, 1645, he obtained a patent for upwards of 12 morgens on L. I. next to Harry Breser's land in Brī, as per p. 370 of do. Dec 3, 1652, sold Cornelis de Potter upwards of 2 morgens of land with buildings in Br", as per p. 376 of do. Oct. 15, 1653, while ferryman, he bought of " Daniel Whyt- heade" a house and lot at the ferry, which lot Whytheade

Feb. 10, 1660, he sold to Wm Goulder plantation-lot No. 3 in Gd, as per town rec. Resided on S. I. in 1689. A Derrick Cornelissen bought a tract of the Indians at Ches- quakes, N. J. Dirck Janse, from Maarssenveen in the province of Utrecht, b. 1635; emigrated in 1657; m. Ist, Oct. 8, 1662, Annetje Hansen Bergen (or Annetje Feddens) wid. of Jan Clercq; m. 2ª, prior to 1689, Elizabeth - On ass. roll of Brn of 1675, and ferryman. On ass. rolls of Flh of 1676 and '83 and patent of 1685, as per Thompson's L. I. Took the oath of allegiance in FIh in 1687. Apl. 29, 1689, he sold 20 morgens at Bedford to Derick Cornelissen Hoogland of S. I., as per p. 145 of Lib. I. of Con. From a map on file in the office of the Sec. of State at Albany, made by "Ja. Cortelyan, sworn surveyor," filed Aug. 8, 1681, it appears that " Klyn Dirk," who was probably Dirk Janse Hoogland, owned a farm of 2 lots in Fih on the W. side of the "highway to the ferry," S. of " Pieter Lott's" and N. of "John Ditmarsen's," about 622 ft. in width and 7241 ft. English in length, cong. upwards of 52 morgens, covering the farms as lately held by Henry S. Ditmars and of John Ditmars in his own right, or what they inherited from Abraham Ditmars their fa- ther. In 1677 there was a dispute between him and Pieter Lott about the boundary between their farms, which was finally settled by arbitration, as per pp. 39 and 53 of Lib. AA of Flh rec.
