Purchased the cruiser Esmeralda from Chilo and delivered her to Japan dormy the Chin- ese-Japanese War: rendered valuable serv- ices to L. S. Gov't in purchase of vessels and munitions of war, both before and dur- ing the War with Spain; in several instances blocked the efforts of the Spaniards to pur- chase foreign war vessels and supplies, andt in inany ways andled the Gov't hy services which were formally acknowledged by Secre- tary Long. Established in City of Manaos, 10 iniles up the Amazon River, a modern trolley road, electric light system, water works and the asphalt block pavement, Dur- ing Russo-Japanese War was pro-Russian, and at ontset of the wai purchased for the Rus- Man Gov't all the availalde ordnance and pro- jeetiles in the U. S., and bought and shipped to Russia the submarine Protertor, five other submarines and ten torpedo-boats; had an audience with the Czar; received letters of credit of Rothschild Preres of Paris for $150,600,000, and conducted important negotia- tions preventing the sale of the Argentine and Chilean war vessels to Japan and Tur- key. During past 15 years has devoted him- self largely to the consolidation of indus- trials, and has succeeded in establishing thirty-nine consolidations with an ontstand- ing ramutalization of over $3fishing; and he has become widely known as the Father of Trusts.
