Dis- tinguished as criminal advocate, has secured acquittal of over sixty defendants charged with murder, and has been successful in cases for contestants in many prominent will cases; successfully prosecuted case of Hess for libel against N. Y. Press, and has appeared in cel- ebrated cases in all departments of legal practice in New York and inany other States. represented the Astor House in a suit brought against the proprietors of that ho- tel. Messrs. Allen and Dam, by JJ. Milton Tur- ner, the colored U. S. minister to Liberia, un- der the Civil Rights Bill, for damages, growing out of the fact that they refused to enter- tain him and give him room at their hotel, and Mr. Turner was defeated in his suit. He Tepresented the celebrated Dr. Helmbold in his various successful efforts to protect him- self against his relatives, who sought to put him in a lunatic asylum, so that they might enjoy his property. Mr. Curtis also settled the law in reference to the use of a per- son's name in the action of Helmhold vs. Hlehinboll, et .al., in which the Supreme Court derlared that a man's name was not an asset in bankruptey, but belonged to him ns absolutely as did the hairs on his head and the hands on his body. Mr. Curtis, in 1-4, defended William N. Riddle. charged with looting the Penn Bank, in Pittsburgh. P'a., and acquitted him. He also appeared for William Reinlander, who was charged with the attempted murder of Lawyer Prake. and acquitted him. The fammiy then tried to put Rmnlander in a lunatic asylum, but were defeated by the efforts of Mr. Curtis. The proceedings in this case were made the 1 4-ja of the proceedings in which Harry Thaw was the moving party.
