Dr. Jonas Charles LIermann and Amelia Louise (Rudiger ) Freund; father was deputy insp .- gen. of hospitals during Crimean War, surgeon in British Army, founder and first directing physician of German Hasp., Dalston, Lon- don; mother was niece and eumpanion of Christian Huettuer (noted linguist, who as ser. and interpreter accompanied Lord Ma- cartney's first English Embassy to Chiua), and under non-de-plume of Amelia Lewis gained an international reputation as writer on social economics. Went to Oxford Univ. with London Times and Carpenter scholar- ships, won in open competiton, remaining there three years, but came to V. S. in 1-71. before finishing full course; - m. 1st, 1Ss7. Florenee Smith (now deceased), by whom had one daughter, Florence Louise, b. 18-9: in. 2d, 1890, Anna C. Hughes, by whom has two danghters, Annette, b. 1:06, and Mar jorie, b. 1901. While at Oxford, and before he was 22, started the Dark Blue Magazine. to which the Rosettis, Swinbourne and Wil- liain Murris, the poets, Professors Blackie, Dowden and Sylvester, Rev. J. G.
