HAMMERSTEIN, Oscar:
Theatrical mg'r and operatic impresario; b. Berlin, Germany, 1817; came to U. S., 1863, and worked as cigar maker, invent- ing and patenting many labor-saving de- vices in that industry. In loos wrote three I.act comedies, which were successfully pro- duced at one of the German theatres in N. Y. City : in 1970 began as a theatrical man- ager, but that venture was financially un- successful; in 18-0 built the Harlem Opera Ilouse, one of the most beautiful theatres in the world; later built the Columinis Theatre in Harlem, the Manhattan Opera House, which afterward became Koster & Bial's Music Hall, and the Olympic, now the New York Music Hall, which was taken from him by the N. Y. Life Ins. Co. op a mortgage for $900,000; since then has built the Victoria, which he now manages, the Delasco Theatre, and the new Opera House, which in the seasons of 1900-07 and 1997-4S, gave grand opera of the highest quality; now also building an Opera House in Phila- delphia, and is preparing to give the best attractions in grand opera both in N.
