Musician, composer; b. Dublin, Ireland, Feb. 1, 1839; grandson of Samuel Lover, the popular Irish novelist; ed. by private tutors in Germany; musical education covered com- plete range, but he specialized in the violin- cello and was solo 'eellist in the Court Or- chestra of the Kingdom of Würtemberg, at Stuttgart and en tour in various European cities. In that capacity came to N. Y. City, 1886, as solo 'cellist at Metropolitan Opera Ilonse: afterward appeared in same capacity with the leading orchestras; when Gilmore died and the question of securing a con- duetor for the 22'd Reg't Band who would be a worthy successor of that famons conductor beenme important, he was chosen as the leader, and has held the position for twelve years. Was for some time conductor of the Pittsburgh Orchestra, and for the past few years has been at the head of his own Now York organization. Author of many comic operas, including Prince Ananias, The Amver, Babes in Toyland, It Happened in Nordland, etf .; of the cantata The Captive, and of numerous compositions for band and orches- tra. as well as many vocal numbers.
