Carefully trained in journalism, and on death of father, 1972. succeeded to pro- prietorship and management of the Herald, which has ever since continued. Fitted out, at personal expense, the Jeannette Polar Ex- ploring Expd'n; sent Henry M. Stanley tu Africa to find Livingston; for a time con- ducted a London edition, and for years has condneted and still conducts a Paris edition; inaugurated in England the plan of publish- ing storm warnings telegraphed from the I nited ,States. Joined John W. Mackey, in 1>>3, in the organization of the Commercial Cable Co., which laid an entirely new cable between America and Europe (the Mackey- Bennett cables), greatly increasing the vol. ume and reducing the cost of transatlantic communication between the Old and the New Worlds. Recreation: Yachting: won an international yacht race from Sandy Hook to the Needles. Isle of Wight, against two competitors, with his schooner yacht the Henrietta, 1866, and sailed a similar race. 1870, from Queenstown to N. Y. Harbor, but was beaten by the English Yacht Cambria.
