The financial year, just ended, has been one of ex- traordinary outlay for the Society, but it has also been a year of extraordinary generosity on the part of our mem- bers. During the past twelve months the Society has gained possession of a building of its own, has furnished it, and removed to it. It has also published its most valua- ble manuscript. Such extraordinary expenses are not likely soon to occur again. On the other hand, the ordi- nary expenses of the Society are become vastly greater. The charges for rent, insurance, fuel, gas, water, and re- pairs of building will have to be met every year.
We are almost shut off from the purchase of books, the item for which in the present report is ouly $43.85, a sum in keeping with our means, but ludicrously inadequate to our needs. The addition of a hundred members to our number would add a thousand dollars to our income, and render the administration of our affairs easy to the Board of Management.

THE BUILDING FUND.
. November 23, 1869, Julius Dexter, S. C. Newton, L. E. Mills, John M. Newton, Eugene F. Bliss, J. Bryant Walker, Robert Clarke, M. F. Force, P. S. Conner, and Horatio Wood agreed to pay annually for ten years cer- tain sums, varying from ten to one hundred dollars, to form a building fund. The whole sum thus subscribed to be annually paid was $375, or for the ten years $3,750. Of this amount $3,060 was finally paid. The money paid in was yearly invested, as were likewise the income from former investments and other sums which were attracted to the fund. To the end of last year these sums were :

The building which the Society now occupies was bought from Wm. M. Ramsay, and possession was given June 1, 1885. Ten thousand dollars were paid down, and there remain to be paid twenty thousand dollars, on which the Society pays five per cent annual interest. The Society is allowed to pay the principal at any time, or to make partial payments upon it in sums of five thousand dollars.
It is greatly to be wished that some beginning of making up this sum of twenty thousand dollars should be made. . The treasurer would suggest that a subscription be made upon terms similar to that in which our present building fund originated, an account of which has just been given. EUGENE F. BLISS,
Treasurer.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF OHIO.
STEVENSON LETTERS.
Dr. Benjamin F. Stevenson, of Visalia, Kenton Co., Ky., gave a collection of about three hundred and fifty letters, written for the greater part to his brother, the Hon. Thomas B. Stevenson, by prominent politicians of all parts of the country and, particularly, of Kentucky. These letters treat of the politics of the Clay period, the dissolution of the Whig party and the beginning of Se- cession. Among the Kentucky correspondents are to be found the names of Magoffin, of John C. Mason, A. Beatty, Bell, Henry Clay and his son, James B. Clay, John C. Breckinridge, Crittenden, Garret Davis and the late John B. Stevenson. The Henry Clay letters, with one ex- ception, are copies. William B. Reed of Philadelphia is the writer of more than eighty letters of this collection ; Thomas Corwin writes forty-four. There are two letters from Horace Greeley, one each from Winfield Scott, John C. Calhoun, James Buchanan, W. G. Brownlow and Reverdy Johnson ; several from Charles Anderson, from Caleb B. Smith and from the generous giver of the col- lection. Besides the letters are a few miscellaneous docu- ments of curious interest. These letters have been arranged alphabetically in two volumes and the volumes indexed.
TORRENCE PAPERS.
In the last report of the Librarian of the Society oc- curs the name of Aaron Torrence as the giver of 67 vol- umes and 630 pamphlets ; to these are this year added 40 volumes. whom have been prominent in the development of Ciu- cinnati, he had in his hands documents of the highest value for the local history of our city and going back almost to its foundation. There are the curious orders of our early settlers and of the officers and soldiers of Fort Washington upon Smith & Findlay, suttlers or general traders; the orders and vouchers of the military author- ities in the various campaigns against the Indians at the close of the last century ; many certificates of the Receiver in the Land Office here; the muster rolls of the State Militia, and documents relating to the War of 1812. There is a great number of letters received by General Findlay when he was a member of Congress from hungry constituents, there are letters written by Samuel Torrence from West Point, when he was a cadet there in 1823-28, letters from General Wayne, from General Wilkinson and from General Jessup. In this collection all the prominent families of the carly city and vicinity are represented, the Shorts, Worthingtons, Wrights, Lytles, Burnets, Long- worths, Scheneks, Taylors, Southgates, Ludlows, Sloos, Mahards, Bullocks, Kilgours, Yeatmans, Ruffins, Storers, Baums, Buchanans, Carneals, Dawsous, Drakes, Ham- monds, Kempers. There are letters and other papers of President Harrison from the time he was a lieutenant in the army. There are plats of the various subdivisions of the city, legal documents of many kinds, specimens of early paper money, invitations and visiting cards, accounts with individuals and lists of prices, a mine of treasure to the future investigator.
