ANNUAL REPORTS
OF THE
Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio
FOR 1892.
:
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.
CINCINNATI, December 5, 1892.
The following report is presented by the Librarian for the year ending with this date. The accessions to the library have been. :
Bound volumes
684
Pamphlets. 1,319
Unbound volumes of newspapers.
5
Maps.
83
Manuscripts

TOTAL.
2,099
The library now contains 12,443 volumes and 53,898 pamphlets. The number of contributors has been 138. Appended to this report is a list of the contributions with the donors' names. Of the books added, 639 were given, forty-two purchased, and three procured by exchange. Thirty-two of the purchased books were gained through the Elizabeth Haven Appleton Fund, all of which are recent valuable pub- lications, and well worthy the attention of the Society's members. While this fund is doing a good work in adding new books to the library, the growth in the pamphlet department makes the want of another fund greatly felt-this is a fund for binding and repairs. The completed sets of magazines, the proceedings and collections of various societies,

ought to be bound for their own better preservation, for ease in consul- tation, and for economy of space on the pamphlet shelves. As the number of annual reports and catalogues continually increases, and as these are scattered through many boxes, it is slow and tedious work to get together 'all the reports, catalogues, or other helps bearing upon some particular investigation.
Many valuable books might long be preserved from the ravages of time by prompt attention to their loosened leaves and covers, while old maps and papers would be saved from crumbling to decay by proper cloth mountings, or some other arrangement whereby they could be freed from their folds and creases. The librarian is constantly ham- pered by the want of suitable means for classifying and arranging the material now in the library; and expedients are resorted to, often far from satisfactory, with the end in view of making our collections available for present use.
The work of classification among the maps and pamphlets was begun sometime ago, but discontinued for the want of shelf room. It gives me satisfaction to state that this difficulty is happily overcome for the present by a recent gift of book-cases from a member of the Society. These were placed in the third story, and have received the unbound · newspapers, until now occupying space in the pamphlet room. I have here presented some of the pressing needs of the library that only money can relieve.
May I now be permitted a word to members or any interested persons as to contributions ?
We have a few faithful friends among us who ever bear the Society in mind, and enrich our historic treasures in various ways; these gifts, with the donations from other Historical Societies and Institutions, have kept up the standard, and made the number of contributions equal to the average of recent years. Many others, I am sure, would help in this growth of material for the future history of our city and state were the aims and needs of the Historical Society more frequently brought to their attention, and this assistance could be given with only the cost of a little time and patience in searching though what is usually thought worthless rubbish accumulating in the attics or closets of almost

every home. It is in these time-worn books, pamphlets, letters, and other manuscripts that the writer of history often finds the material of his new work. Especially do we call for every book or manuscript written by an Ohio person, any book or pamphlet printed in or relating to our city or state. Odd volumes may fill up the gaps in our sets, or replace an imperfect copy ; a single report or catalogue may be the one to complete a set.
Perhaps the most reliable source for history is to be found in manu- scripts; letters written in the early part of this century often bring to light information of the greatest interest now. A. responsibility rests upon each of us to rescue from oblivion or destruction these treasures of the past; before any thing is given to the flames or consigned to the . waste basket, think first if it might not some time be of use in the Historical Society, and while rescuing the old, remember to preserve whatever is to throw light upon our own lives and ways of living. One fruitful source of help is to be found in pictures, and in this, our day of amateur photography, there is no reason why we should not have in our collections an abundance of pictures of public and private buildings, as well as of individuals. All these things are passing away, should we not preserve for future generations what will represent the history of our times ? And in this we ask not for money, but interested helpers with some knowledge of the means used to carry on this important work of ours.
Respectfully submitted, C. W. LORD, Librarian.
