TREASURER'S REPORT.

Through the efforts of E. F. Bliss, Esq., a subscription to Building Fund has been started on the same plan as used some years ago. The amount already subscribed is $4,650 in ten annual payments. The condition of these subscrip- tions is that upon the sum of $5,000 being accumulated, the Treasurer is empowered to reduce the debt on the building in payments to that amount. By special legislation, at one of the regular meetings, the President, Recording Secretary and Treasurer were empowered to sell the stocks and bonds belonging to Endowment Fund, applying the amount re- ceived therefrom toward reducing the debt on the build- ing. Through the kind assistance of several members, who pledged their own securities as collateral, the Soci- ety was able to borrow ten thousand dollars from the Chamber of Commerce. This sum, with amount accru- ing from sale of Endowment Fund and Building Fund Securities, amounted to twenty thousand dollars, the amount of mortgage on building. By this arrangement, the Society ownis its present building and escapes taxation after this year. The State Board of Revision, however, has been memorialized by the Society to omit December taxes, and we hope to be relieved of this burden.

From the reports just read, the Society makes a fair exhibit, but owing to the increased general expenses, the Treasurer has been compelled to use moneys belonging to other funds in order to defray current expenses. To meet this annual deficiency every effort must be made to increase the Society's membership, and the Treasurer ap- peals to each individual member to use every effort toward this end. The Society has made rapid advances, must the good work already accomplished lessen for want of funds ?

In presenting the foregoing statements, it will be seen the Society is prospering, and the labor which several of the early members expended on the Society's behalf is gradually bearing fruit. We are still greatly in need of funds for pur- chase of books, which at present are beyond the reach of our resources. The amount expended during the year past was thirty dollars, a sum ridiculously small in proportion to our needs. Last March the Society was offered the valuable library of Peter Thomson, Esq., for five thousand dollars. In order to excite interest in the purchase of this library, one of the members offered to donate two hundred and fifty dol- lars, with the understanding that nineteen citizens should pledge their names for a like amount. After considerable. canvassing, this was found impracticable, and the offer of two

9

TREASURER'S REPORT. .

hundred and fifty dollars was still kept open, providing the sum of five thousand dollars could be obtained in small sub- scriptions. At a special meeting of the Society, at which over one thousand dollars were pledged, a Committee of Three was appointed to examine the library and solicit subscriptions. After numerous efforts, the sum of twenty-four hundred dollars was subscribed, of which amount four hundred and sixty dollars were paid to Treasurer. Since that time, no further effort has been made.

In order to put the collection where the members could see it, Mr. Thomson placed the books in the Society's rooms, where they now are. If. Mr. Thomson is still willing to dis- pose of the collection, can not some means be devised for the consummation of the purchase ? In the meantime, the Treas- urer holds four hundred and sixty dollars, as before mentioned, for instructions as to disposition.

There is a debt of ten thousand dollars still on our building, which sum we are enabled to borrow through the gen- erosity of two of our members, while only forty-six hundred and fifty dollars have been pledged in annual subscriptions, covering ten years, to extinguish the loan. If the member- ship could be increased to two hundred, we should be able to pay all expenses, and not fall behind as heretofore.

The coming year will inaugurate a series of " centennial" enterprises, to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of our state. What more enduring monument can the Society erect, than by concerted action on the part of its members to agree to wipe this debt off our building and place the Society upon a permanent and independent basis ?
