ANNUAL REPORTS
OF THE
Historical and Philosophical Society of Ohio
FOR 1891.
'The year has been marked in the history of the Society by two events. In April the Peter G. Thomson collection of books on Ohio was conditionally secured to the Society, and in September the collec- tion was presented to the Society and became part of its library. The collection comprised 768 bound volumes and 1163 pamphlets, and its addition makes the Society's library the best in existence on Ohio. Although the library is not large, its importance is increased by the fact that the collection is wholly of American history. Some years ago search was made in Paris for a little volume, " Lettres ecrites des Rives de l'Ohio par cl. Ad. De Lezay-Marnezia." The book could not be found in any of the public libraries there, although they were the largest in the world, and the volume had been published in Paris. It had become rare as it had been suppressed by the police. A copy of the work is in the Society's library.
The other event is even more important, as it provides an annual fund to the Society for book purchases, while accomplishing the wish of the contributors to testify their love and admiration of a noble woman. Some of the pupils of the late Miss Appleton have given to the Society, in her memory, a fund, of which the income shall be ex- pended in purchasing books in her name. The fund is under the control of the Society, and has been invested by the Treasurer. His report states the conditions of the gift and the names of the contribu- tors. Already some income has been received and expended for

books which are marked by a suitable special book plate --- a gift also. The income of the fund will be about one hundred and forty dollars a year.
Two portraits were given to the Society during the year. The first is of Robert McGregor, a well-known merchant of Cincinnati, where he lived from 1819 until his death in 1866. The picture is given by his family and was painted by Louis Seebohm. The other portrait, painted by C. T. Webber, is of Manning F. Force, for many years a member, and until his removal from Cincinnati, the President of the Society. The portrait is given to the Society by subscriptions raised by Mrs. Olive A. Mclaughlin.
The reports of the Librarian and of the Treasurer, exhibit the condition of the library and of the finances of the Society. There · is urgent need of additional corporate members. The Society is slenderly endowed, and relies upon the annual dues of its members for current expenses. With the growth of the library, the Society's expenditures also grow larger. The annual dues are $ro.oo, and the number of contributing members must be considerably increased if the Society is to continue its work properly. The work now is the collection, preservation and arrangement of materials of American history, and especially of Ohio history. The library has grown in little more than twenty years from 700 volumes and 1, 100 pamphlets to 11,841 volumes and 53,000 pamphlets, all catalogued, arranged, and easily accessible. The Society owns its house, No. 115 West Eighth Street, but has a debt outstanding which the growth of the . Building Fund is reducing and will finally extinguish.
Entertaining and valuable papers were read before the Society ": during the year : By Samuel F. Hunt, on the Treaty at Greenville ;- by Joseph Cox, on Historic Persons and Places of the Miami Valley ; by P. V. N. Myers, on the Coming of Apollo.
Appended to this report is an extract from the minutes of the Society's meeting September 4, 1891, which relates to the Thomson , books.
Respectfully submitted for the Executive Board,
NATL. HENCHMAN DAVIS, Vice-President.

APPENDIX.
EXTRACT FROM MINUTES, SEPTEMBER 4, 1891.
Peter Thomson offered his collection of books and pamphlets on Ohio to the Society for purchase in the early part of the year 1887, and a subscription was then started to raise the price of $5,000 which he asked for the books. After about $2,200 had been subscribed, the effort to raise the money languished, and was at last abandoned. Subscriptions to the amount of $567.50 had been paid, and the money was invested by the Treasurer and held as a separate fund. With accrued interest, this fund amounted at the last annual meeting of the Society to $648.62. Last winter, under the stimulus of Mr. Thomson's avowed intention to sell his books at auction, and with the encouragement of a generous gift of $500 by Rufus King, a renewed attempt to raise money for the purchase was made, and so far successfully that the books were bought conditionally from Mr. Thomson in March last for $4,650.
The subscribers now present the collection to the Society.
The subscribers were Mrs. C. L. Anderson, Larz Anderson, Mrs. Louise N. Anderson, Miss Elizabeth II. Appleton, S. P. Bishop, E. F. Bliss, R. B. Bowler, A. H. Chatfield, C. P. Davis, N. H. Davis, E. C. Dawes, Charles Dexter, Julius Dexter, Mrs. C. T. Dickson, Richard Dymond, A. G. Erkenbrecher, Miss Clara B. Fletcher, J. A. Gano, Edward Goepper, Herman Goepper, L. B. Harrison, F. J. Jones, C. H. Kellogg, Rufus King, Frederick Lunkenheimer, Alexander McDonald, James McDonald, G. T. Miller, Il. B. Morehead, T. C. Pearce, Patrick Poland, C. P. Taft.
The Society also appropriated $50.00 toward the purchase, and a few dollars were given anonymously.
